The African penguin has officially been classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, putting them one step away from becoming extinct in the wild. Having lost over 97% of their population, African penguins may become extinct in less than a decade. What are the main drivers of their decline? Commercial fishing depletes populations of sardines and anchovies, their main source of food. Current no-take zones have failed to adequately protect key feeding zones. 💬 Zandi Ndhlovu @Zandithemermaid is once again raising her voice: "The idea that we could continue to see species become extinct in our lifetime when we know so much, feels unreal. And everything is connected; if this species becomes extinct it means we’ll lose a critical part of our ecosystem.
