Funnily enough in another life, while I was still at Oxford doing my doctorate, I wrote an academic article about dreadlocks in the Middle Ages, otherwise known as the “Polish plait” or plica Polonica. They were generally associated with old women who didn’t wash properly, and were referred to in the common parlance as “sluttish widow’s locks.” Old women would make offerings to saints, such as St Cuthburga, for relief from the condition, which was painful and stinky.

@AppyOrtho Most blacks with dreads don't wash their hair, which is gross. I've come across blacks with cornrows and braids, but never dreads that didn't smell. I don't know why they never wash dreads.
