Cruelty Smiles Jack Nicholson's Joker, from Tim Burton's 1989 “Batman,” is more interesting -- and way more frightening than Heath Ledger's Joker (or Joaquin Phoenix's, or the little we've seen from Barry Keoghan's so far) for the simple reason that he was written in a pre *heaving sound* Woke era, when social commentary was not considered more interesting than the idiosyncrasies of human personality. For the young people used to peeking only at contemporary films (in between tiktok reels at that), the above statement sounds simply indefensible. Probably the only thing that is mentioned when people talk about Nicholson's Joker is that he was goofy and made lame dad jokes. But follow me here, this is really going somewhere. The motivation of Nicholson's Joker is as surprising as it is intellectually perverse. His driving motivation is... Art? During the Gotham Museum scene, he tells Vicki Vale: “I make art until somebody dies. I am the world's first homicidal artist.” For comparison, the entire mental horizon of Heath Ledger's Joker is exhausted in sociological and moral diatribes, and it is such a tired schtick that it's been deservedly lampooned in the meme phrase "We live in a society". Ledger's Joker is a man on a mission: to rub society's hypocrisy in everyone's face, to show that civilization is just a facade. In other words, he still operates within the mental horizon of someone who cares. Meanwhile, Nicholson's Joker is just... expressing himself. In the MGM opening clip with Leo the Lion, we see the inscription “ars gratia artis” , which means “art for art's sake,” that is, art done purely for its beauty. Jack Nicholson's character does not act to prove any point. While Heath Ledger's Joker commits murders that are necessary to carry out his plan and prove he is right, Nicholson's Joker makes plans solely so he can kill and mutilate indiscriminately as part of a grand aesthetic project. If all artists are vain and self-centered to a great measure, Nicholson's Joker takes those traits to an insane, macabre and deadly extreme. The idea of murder as art has so far remained an intellectual diversion, but occasionally we catch disturbing glimpses of a world in which this vision could become reality. During a 2001 press conference, Lars von Trier was asked about the 9/11 attacks and replied that the attack was the greatest work of art possible in the entire universe, and that not even music had reached such heights (von Trier would try to explain what he meant in "The House That Jack Built", from 2018. Trust me, it's a great laugh). In 2016, Russian ambassador Andrei Karlov was shot dead in a museum during an art exhibition. One of the photos drew attention for the perfection of its composition: the ambassador in the foreground, lying on the floor with arms outstretched, the gunman standing, pointing the pistol up, smartly dressed in a crisp suit, and in the background a row of paintings symmetrically arranged. It looked like a perfectly staged film scene, and many montages were made showing how the real scene obeyed various rules of proportion, harmony, and composition. In 1827, Sir Thomas De Quincey published an essay titled “On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts”, a satirical piece in which a fictional society defends murder as an artistic expression. In the essay, through very well-grounded argumentation, murder is presented not only as a respectable and even necessary aesthetic activity. The text mentions a long list of illustrious historical murders, judging each according to its aesthetic merits. In that essay, there is a reference to the Latin Christian author Lactantius. According to him, murder as amusement or aesthetic game is even more perverse because it implicates not only the murderer but also spreads the stain of the crime to those who watch (Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" -- also a laugh a minute film -- goes to absurd, movie-breaking lengths to explore that notion). Nicholson's Joker is particularly perverse for attempting to unite the horror of real death (not depictions of it) with the beauty of art. The juxtaposition of goofiness and stale, tasteless jokes with actual cruel murder is truly disturbing, like the grotesque dead models "singing" in that TV comercial, a scene which feels like it's really crossing a line in what should be just a mindless fun romp for kids. Scenes like this make me think that Nicholson's Joker could be the crazy fun uncle of the sadistic boys in Haneke's already mentioned "Funny Games". They share the same rancid sense of humor. If Heath Ledger's Joker sewed a cell phone inside a person's stomach as part of a prison escape plan, Nicholson's Joker disfigured a woman's face with acid and displayed her as “a sketch” of his art. Batman 1989 is not a comic book movie. It's gothic horror with a few action scenes interspersed. It understands a basic psychological fact (and that is why it feels so more intellectually and emotionally mature than what came after): cruelty is fun if you are cruel. Heath Ledger's Joker makes a statement: “Civilization is a lie.” It is a statement that seems fascinating at a certain age, but starts to feel banal as we get older. Jack Nicholson's Joker, on the other hand, asks a question: “Can we get off on suffering?” -- and he's not asking about a possibility (the "yes" to that answer is, unfortunately, a given). He's actually making a suggestion. Nothing is scarier than a cruel person having fun.
