Regardless of where you stand on Balogun-Gate, the whole reaction to both sides highlights some very key differences in the American vs European mindset. In the American mind, "getting it right" is the most important thing. Thats how justice is served, is by getting to the correct result based on the play on the field. The European mind is different though. They have an instinct towards bureaucracy and are obsessed with process. The Process must be respected. Respecting process is more important than the specifics of what happened on the field. And thats why you get this wild take thats fairly common where a Euro will say something like "He didnt deserve the red card, but once it was given it cannot be overturned!". To the American mind, justice is served by getting the call right, regardless of process. To the European mind, justice is served by respecting process, regardless of the result. Its a fascinating look into the psyche of both, and if I'm permitted a little armchair psychoanalysis of both groups, id say the reason lies in their history. The Europeans spent centuries as the peasant class of Europe, essentially being forced to accept whatever shit the aristocracy piled up on them. There was no "appeals" process, they took what they had too, because there was no other option. In this environment, a certain "acceptance of one's fate" or immunity to overt injustice likely seeped into the national psyches. No one had success by "fighting the power", the power imbalance was simply too great. What eventually saved them though, was process. Rules-based orders were the only thing that gave them a semblance of power vs the aristorcracies of their upper classes. And so they came to revere Process as the Ultimate Good and working OUTSIDE process as the Ultimate Evil. The Americans, on the other hand, never developed their national psyche in the world of Kings and Aristocrats. Class was far less rigid in the new world, and risk-taking WAS highly rewarded there. "Fighting the power" to "do what was right" WAS greatly rewarded during the American Revolution when a few great men "fought the power" and were gifted with what would become the most powerful, prosperous country on Earth. And so a certain disdain against "process" took hold, a general feeling that "process" was only as good as long as it provided fair and just outcomes. As opposed to the European model, where "process " was the only thing that had given them anything close TO "fair and just outcomes". So in that context, the massive gap between both sides makes sense Or maybe this is all nonsense and its just anti-American, pro-Euro tribalism, who knows 🤷🏼‍♂️

🚨 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: Belgium have appealed FIFA's decision to overturn Folarin Balogun's suspension. Balogun could still miss the USA's World Cup clash with Belgium if the appeal is successful before kick-off.

@akafaceUS I think they are seeing American in a much better light than their media and politicos tell them. Hopefully they’re showing wireless hole punchers?

How has this myth that the VAR only showed the Balogun foul in slow motion been allowed to persist? We saw the referee watch it in multiple times in full speed during the broadcast

@n9i4n @Pir8teAngel @PFF_Nicky #4 didn't go through Flo. In fact, the close up clip shows the full event from the moment the first bit of contact is made with the Bosnian outmuscling Flo infront of him. Flo continues to fight for the ball by trying to put his arm infront of#5 and goes through #4's ankle

Balogun is not looking at the defender and is trying to get the ball, the defender throws his body in the way and Balogun lands awkwardly. Never should’ve been a red, suspension would’ve been unjust.

@SSBak_i @blueyank4life @DiceElDani Flo was aware of that and brings his arm across infront of #4 while trying to stepping to the side as shown in all vids in a barge to contest for the ball since it was a 50/50 duel. In the end as he stepped across, he put all his weight on #4's ankle & almost snapped it.

This completely misunderstands what a red card is. A red card isn't just a punishment for malicious intent—it's also a sanction for actions that endanger an opponent. Plenty of red cards are given for reckless challenges without any intent to injure. If "it was an accident" becomes the standard, you've just eliminated half the red cards in football. The referee saw the incident, applied the Laws of the Game, and FIFA overturned it after the fact. That's the real issue.

A fantastic decision by FIFA. Red cards are given out as a punishment to deter bad behavior; when the behavior is accidental, issuing a punishment is entirely performative. Balogun’s red card served no purpose. Its only role would have been to unjustly handicap one of the best storylines of the tournament in their biggest (and most visible) moment so far. A fantastic move by FIFA to recognize this and correct to allow the players to decide the outcome of the game. Well done.

@Pir8teAngel @PFF_Nicky Both players play for the ball and are parallel to touchline. Flo extends arm to initiate contact. Bosnian does a slight barge and overpowers and gets ahead. Flo tries bringing arm infront to contest and barge out of way back -> steps on on the ankle almost snapping it. Tis red.

@PFF_Nicky Seriously everyone watch the play. US had possession. Balogun is playing for the ball. BH player jumps in front. Incidental contact instigated by the defender.

So lemme get this straight... While watching the broadcast the whole world agreed that it was a bang bang play and shouldn't have been a red card. And now the red card gets, in a sense, reversed and now the whole world is pissed?

Belgian FA pulling no punches in a strongly worded statement. Say they are “astonished” by the decision and now “investigating all potential options” as they look to “safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament” RBFA STATEMENT The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time). FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5: "If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed." The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating member associations on 12 May 2026. The same rule is reiterated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Coordination Meeting prior to each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026 workshop presentations. In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options.”
