@EFFERCETAMOL Vietnam should look into developing APFSDS for 85mm, already exists, they should just copy it

As for the gun. While a 100mm would be great, fabricating the long rifled barrel and mounting such a powerful gun on such a light chassis would be quite challenging. Meanwhile the 85mm is much easier to handle, and we have the Type 63 to study from. x.com/EFFERCETAMOL/s…

Type 63 amphibious light tanks of the Vietnam People's Army's 950th Armored Brigade (Military Region 9) conduct firing tests. Not often we see them anymore. 1/3

T-1 prototype will be here soon, though reveal will likely be a while, finished product longer still. In the meantime, here's my take based on what's available: PT76-type hull, ERA. 3-man turret, 85mm gun, Viettel FCS. New engine. Rough sketch by me, finishing touch by Gemini.

It's official - The "T-1 amphibious tank" will be Vietnam's first domestic tank model. Factory Z125 to complete the prototype before April 2026. Things are moving so fast.

@EFFERCETAMOL Why not just upgrade Type 63 to Type 63A standard as part of a partnership with PRC, to develop and learn skills from them?

#China did not have a wheeled APC in service until the WZ-523 right? While this is true for the most part, China actually produced a number of limited production or prototype APCs. This is one of a very few photos of the WZ-533, built on some civilian truck in the 1960s

#Chinese PLZ-45. Although made for the export market, some were accepted into PLA service, and their performance spurred development of the PLZ-05 and the broader adoption of 155mm NATO standard guns.

@T_55AM1_ It’s not suprising to see Type 56/81 still produced in standard form- a lot are exported to Europe and up until recently Canada for the civilian market, they have a pretty good standard of quality on those guys

#Cambodia Ignoring one of the weirder Khmer dubs I have heard on TikTok, we have footage of Norinco Type 56-I assault rifles being distributed to RCA soldiers. The footage, as reportedly dated by the Thai OP, is from the 10/03/2026. What is interesting is the date on each of the crates. Each of them have the contract number 20190226 written on them. What this meant is that these rifles are produced for a contract that was signed on the 26/02/2019. Which suggests that Chinese OEMs (under Norinco), back in 2019, were still producing Type 56-I assault rifles for contracts. From the crates, each person receives 1 x Type 56-I assault rifle and 3 x 30 rds magazines (wrapped in a bundle), which is standard. However, this brings up a theory regarding the poor performance of these rifles (2019 contract) in real combat conditions. The theory, or 3 (below), suggests that the Chinese OEMs who have been producing legacy weapons (T-56 and T-81 for example) for post-Cold War contracts, have cheapened out on the production themselves and have neglected quality control to the point of probable non-existence. The 2nd theory, which is more on the Cambodian side, is that since these are contract rifles, the emitter of the contracts (the MoND's GDMT) has probably provided requirements for downgraded / downspecced rifles to lessen the procurement costs and that the Chinese OEMs simply fulfilled the contract requests. Then there is a more outlandish theory, a 3rd one, where it is suggested that Chinese small arms were designed to simply be used once and discarded. That theory comes out of the belief that in the case of an invasion of Taiwan, a PLA soldier (with a T-56 for example) would spend most, but not all, his magazines on his chest rig (the T-56 CHICOM only has 3) before dying. So, if the Chinese OEMs are as ruthlessly efficient as suggested, they would produce each rifle to last the same amount of bullets as one soldier would carry into a fight. This theory is backed by the fact that in original T-56 crates, not post-Cold War production, each soldier receives the T-56, 3 magazines in a bundle (seen in the video) and a chest rig (not seen in the video; probably omitted from the contract) as standard. That will be all for my theories on why Chinese small arms performed poorly in Cambodia, but expect follow-up theories.
