Sumaúma tree (Ceiba pentandra) is one of the true giants of the tropical world, and in the Amazon it often rises above everything else in the forest canopy like a skyscraper.
In the Amazon rainforest, it can reach heights of around 70 metres (sometimes even more in ideal conditions). At that height, its crown emerges above the main forest canopy into full sunlight, which is why it’s called an “emergent” tree.
One of its most striking features is its enormous buttress roots. These wide, flaring roots spread out at the base like stone wings, helping to stabilise the tree in shallow rainforest soils where deep anchoring isn’t possible. In the Amazon, these roots can be tall enough for a person to stand inside the gaps between them.
