There’s nuances in who wants what. I can almost believe that Khamenei had religious reasons against the actual nuclear bomb, just as most of the IRGC wanted one. The problem is the strategy to continue getting the capability and wanting this as leverage to warn the US that they will continue with that assembly if they don’t get what they want. Asking the US to accept mere promises that they won’t do that last step after all the pieces are ready is like asking people to have a level of trust when they’ve seen you fund all these proxies. It’s a severe miscalculation of their cards at hand and the misunderstanding of what the US military and IDF intelligence is capable of. A sad outcome to a wrong strategy.

Don't let any retard convince you Iran was not a nuclear threat. The specific FACTS no one disputes and even Iran state: they already had 60%, and we bombed the production facilities a year before, but could not confirm the destruction of the stock. Even if the production is destroyed, post-recovery, the time to arming a nuclear weapon from the stock was predicted to be MONTHS to a year. They only need 1 defensive nuke to secure themselves for producing higher quantity and greater danger. At the end of January, they began failing on negotiations and the nuclear stock recovery effort would begin as soon as they could possibly do it without being noticed. At 60%, there is no longer a discussion, you have breached the treaty, you have gone too far. Without agreeing to terms that would have likely included American people going into the rubble to remove the stock, there had to be an attack. And they would never let us take it away, otherwise the negotiation would have succeeded.
