@TheAnnaGat Yeah, after a number of years of informally doing so I have an intuitive sense for calories based off volume of food + feel. Helps a lot now that I’m trying to shovel in a lot more protein

I have been calorie tracking so hard (America is dangerous!) that I can now correctly guess the number of calories from how I am *feeling* after eating. Anyone else has this?

@00aarti I’m eternally grateful I got to walk by myself to school starting in 1st grade. It’s so obvious to me how important of a developmental experience it is

My friend used to live a little over half a mile away from his 7 year old son’s elementary school and wanted him to practice walking alone, so he let him walk, and planned on coming 20 minutes later. When he got there, someone had already stopped their car and waited with his son, against his wishes, for dad to arrive. In Minneapolis

American parents place strong limits on how far away from the house their kids are allowed to walk or bike alone. @FamStudies

@Hanakookie1 Only for short term skilled nursing care, usually less than 20 days, not for long term care. That’s not covered

I’m quickly becoming an expert on assisted living facilities within the US and learning how ugly bottom line optimization gets when human care is the product

Retirement savings are the primary defensive barrier against the stresses of aging. When you lose your faculties and mobility, you’re still responsible for preparing food, eating, bathing, toileting, cleaning, taking your medication, paying your bills, collecting all supplies, moving yourself, to say nothing of potential extra ailments. Outsourcing all of this comes at a cost, and the burden will invariably fall on family members to organize or personally execute all of this themselves. All of these tasks mirror those of mothers; it’s completely unsurprising they usually fall on the shoulders of women I’m relieved my brother and I are able to manage our dad’s care without financial burden, but it still has taken a significant emotional toll, and in our case, having to manage his care came as a major surprise. Two months ago we weren’t doing anything and now we manage his medications, doctor’s visits, transportation, food, bills, accounts, and other obligations. We’re both heads down, quick-to-action types who rarely complain, and are now caring for someone who is thoroughly unlike us in nature. It’s hard! But could be harder

Millennial/Gen X daughters are facing massive economic disadvantages because of the expectation they’ll be responsible for eldercare, even if there’s other siblings or it’s their in-laws. Anecdotally, this feels true and wholly depressing

@00aarti You are so right to point out this punishing isolation of the extremely old. I left my job so that my widowed Dad wouldn’t have to go through that. He needs full time caregiving, and I am having fun doing that

I used to volunteer at a decent nursing home, and everyone there was so lonely. A couple of them would cry when I held their hand while we chatted. It makes me so sad to think about seniors who don’t have support; so many emotional resources are provided to young people, but theres almost nothing for people on the other end, who have to quickly process their change in circumstances alongside their own decline and mortality

@Hanakookie1 Actually there is little-no government reimbursement for care facilities, it’s a mostly out of pocket expense :/

@00aarti Thats why private equity has been dumping them for a decade. Occupancy rates are 35%. Good luck making any money. Plus govt reimbursement is net 180.

My mom stopped breathing today. She has been on sedatives for the past three days and before that I was lucky we were able to say everything we wanted to say. Now I understand how much she really loved me.

Are there any people in your life or around you that you *would* be friends with if they gave you a chance? It’s worth it to try and place yourself around them more often, and figure out if you feel good around them, try to get a sense of whether they feel good around you too. Ideally there’s mutual respect and desire to make plans and act on them If no one comes to mind, think about where you might find people you would enjoy being around, and try to make yourself more available there. This part takes deliberate work upfront Think about what kind of friendships you’re looking for. The closer the friendship you desire, the more investment upfront you’ll need to make before you can coast on the foundation you’ve laid
