Today at the DCLDE we had our first, last and only in person meeting for the @ACCURATEProject It has been a pleasure to work with a bunch of colleagues and friends on learning more about what we know and what we don't know about acoustic cue production rates in marine mammals

Several members from the ACCURATE project team are this week in Rotterdam for the DCLDE conference. Reliable cue production rates remain one of the major hurdles for density/abundance estimation from passive acoustic monitoring data. dclde2024.com

Recent work led by Julia Zeh & @ProfParksSU on the caller-ID problem (who's doing a sound recorded on a tag) in humpbacks doi.org/10.1098/rsos.2… The caller-ID problem was the focus of the 1 of @ACCURATEProject tasks. Later this year we hope to have additional news about it!

Our new paper led by Yvonne Barkley and our @NOAA partners is out, looking into sperm whale sound production in Hawaiian waters. Used towed array data, hard to use to estimate cue rates, but very interesting for an area where there are no tagged animals doi.org/10.1121/10.002…

Our latest paper reports on narwhal cue production rates from acoustic animal borne tags. Based on a small number of tags from Greenland, care to extrapolate is needed, but this opens the door to PAM density estimation for these elusive creatures doi.org/10.1121/10.002…

The @ACCURATEProject just presented yesterday at the LMR IPR meeting the latest developments regarding cue rates to inform passive acoustic monitoring density estimation. Next year it will be our final year and so we will be working extra hard this year to come in strong!

@jam_machund 🧵on how behaviour can have implications for PAM, using harbour porpoise as a case study, highlingting perils of PAM for density estimation. Behaviour also impacts cue rates, linking the results to the @ACCURATEProject (via @TiagoALOMarques). Outstanding team work.

In under two weeks we had 2 talks on @ACCURATEProject, 1 at SOI @univofstandrews and 1 @EuroCetSoc #ECSconference2023 Great to have discussions about cue rates, what drives them, how to estimate them and when and how migh cue rates be used to inform PAM density estimation.
