Alauddin Khilji began construction of this tower inside the Qutb complex intending it to be twice the height of the Qutb Minar. He died in 1316 CE when only the first storey (roughly 27 metres) was complete, and the project was abandoned. The unfinished stump of the Alai Minar still stands in the Qutb complex today
