A must-read for understanding Israel’s relationship with Palestinian refugees immediately following the 1948 war & claims of “stolen land.”
Captain Allen@CptAllenHistory

Have you heard the story of Israel offering Palestinian Arab refugees who fled the 1948 war the chance to return — with compensation — just weeks after the fighting ended? That’s exactly what happened at the 1949 Lausanne Conference, the UN-backed attempt to broker peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors. Here’s the pattern that has defined the conflict for 76 years. The Arab delegations (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan) refused to even sit in the same room as Israeli representatives. For five months there were no direct talks. They would not recognize Israel as a legitimate negotiating partner. Israel offered to repatriate 100,000 Arab refugees, pay compensation for abandoned lands, release frozen Arab bank accounts, and discuss family reunifications. Israeli delegates also signed the May 12 Protocol accepting the principle of partition. The Arabs rejected everything. They insisted the refugees must return not as citizens seeking peace, but “as masters of the homeland” — explicitly to annihilate the Jewish state. Egypt’s Foreign Minister declared in 1949: “The Arabs intend… to annihilate the State of Israel.” Baghdad Radio broadcast the same message: the Jews were enemies “irrespective of how peace-seeking their intentions may be,” and the Arabs were preparing “the day of vengeance.” The refugees became permanent pawns. Arab states (except Jordan) refused them citizenship, kept them in camps, and weaponized their suffering. The “right of return” was never humanitarian — it was demographic warfare to destroy the Jewish state from within. This was not a one-off. It was the blueprint. 18 years later the Arab League made it explicit at Khartoum: no recognition with Israel, no negotiation of Israel, no peace with Israel. Meanwhile, Israel absorbed around 600,000 Jewish refugees ethnically cleansed from Arab lands — with no UN agency, no generational camps, and no international sympathy. 76 years later the same rejectionist strategy continues, just in new language. The goal has never changed: they will accept no Jewish state in the Middle East, ever.

I am struggling mentally with something today and I just have to remind myself that comparison is the thief of joy. This pasta with peas in a tomato, herbs de Provence, cream cheese, cottage cheese, & nooch sauce helps. #twittersupperclub

@LaughingWolfOne I love my ketchup, but can only imagine how much better that Bulgarian ketchup would be on eggs. 🤩 In my brief online exploration, it seems Bulgarian cuisine is at the crossroad of several awesome culinary cultures, has absorbed the best & then built their own. ❤️

@BitchesBane Your catsup recipe is good, but I’ve fallen hard for the Bulgarian version. Had it on my eggs and sausage this morning and it kicked it into orbit.

Not the street food I was expecting walking the backstreets of Sofia, Bulgaria, but I just had to try it. Different, but tasty.

@LaughingWolfOne I looked at a couple of recipes online, and the ingredients are similar to a chunky Ball Canning spread I like to give as gifts. Peppers, tomatoes, garlic, spices. Will enjoy exploring this. Maybe even replace my ketchup recipe. 😁

@BitchesBane I really want to explore it more. You can get it in varying levels of spiciness, and the flavor is good even if a bit intense depending on which version you get. Next time I'm in a decent grocery I will take a photo of the section and tag you. Plan to bring some home.

@LaughingWolfOne In a quick online search, it looks like a complex cuisine, influenced heavily by both neighboring states & centuries of Ottoman rule.

@BitchesBane Also, lots of use of pork (Ottomans didn't tax or regulate), amazing cheese, and heavy use of yogurt and other dairy. Two cooking lessons so far and still have barely scratched the surface.

@BitchesBane When I say a lot of paprika, I mean they put paprika and smoked paprika in everything. I expect to see chewing gum and baby formula with paprika in it. :) Their catsup is not tomato based but paprika based, and I really like it better than traditional catsup.

@BitchesBane It was very much a Bulgarian take on what they thought Mexican street food would taste like. Not bad actually. Lots of pulled pork but don't think most tex-mex lovers would recognize the rest of the flavors. :)

Yeppers only an F2. Thank God! I witnessed the direct storm hit that killed 27 poor souls in 1997 that was an F5 which hit Apple Creek Estates in Jarrell. I have seen a lot of things but never seen anything like the aftermath of that. It killed half the bulls in the pen of a friend of mine who was a rodeo bucking bulls contractor there that day named Wayne Gibbs. Some them bulls were found skinned from head to toe, some were never found or found ripped apart. The skins completely pulled loose from the carcasses. The asphalt was completely lifted up off the road and gone. The copper pipes pulled up out of the concrete slabs with nothing left....Pure devastation.😔

If you would please take a moment to say a prayer for our neighbors in Mineral Wells, Texas. Many folks lost their homes or they are severely badly damaged. The town was hit with an EF-2 in the sixth straight day of storms for that area. Two people were injured, but miraculously nobody was killed yesterday. We are bracing for three more days of rains and storms here. Its gonna be one those years the old timers call, "Tornado Ripe"..... 🙏🏼
