Regarding the F4U Corsair post, some asked why it used that Gull wing: simply, it allowed use of a bigger prop. The inverted gull wing allowed the fighter to carry a 13-foot propeller while keeping the landing gear short. This design also allowed the wing to attach lower on the fuselage for better, stronger structural support for carrier operations However, it also had some disadvantages, as explained in this video
