Today - a light aircraft crashed into a residential building in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Latest reports from CNN point five people aboard, with all in serious conditions. The aircraft was identified as an EMB-721C Neiva [registration "PT-EYT"] and went down shortly after takeoff from Pampulha airport. ASN stated that "According to preliminary reports, the pilot declared difficulties during the initial climb moments after departure. The aircraft subsequently collided with a building and fell into the parking area" Updates when possible.

For info re the EWR incident, if you’re not familiar with Runway 29, it gets used sparingly at best (I’ve never landed on it in 25 years of flying to EWR), and usually with a howling westerly (As was the case). There is no ILS onto runway 29 (It’s not fitted), just a series of RNAV approaches, the best of which terminate at a decision altitude of 490’ and the remainder of the approach is a visual segment prior to touchdown. RNAVs are not designed to provide precision guidance to landing/touchdown. #avgeek #avgeeks

OTD in 1978: 1st prototype Lockheed Have Blue [c/n 1001], a testbed for stealth technology, crashes in Groom Lake (Nevada, US). Jet had landing gear issues, and in the impossibility of a safe landing, test pilot Bill Park had to eject. He was injured, ending his flying career

OTD in 2002: EAS Airlines Flight 4226, a BAC 1-11, crashes in Gwammaja (Kano, Nigeria). 73 of 77 aboard die, along with 30 on the ground.
