We just observed the highest Equatorial Pacific oceanic heat content for *any* month since 1997 and the highest for April in the entire satellite era. If it wasn’t clear to you before that we were headed for a “Super” El Niño later this year, hopefully it is now.

It's been a dry start to 2026 across the Southeast. This past month did not help as it one of the drier Aprils on record. For several locations, the total precipitation for January through April of this year ranks as the driest 4 month such period ever recorded.

Although the snow season runs through June 30th, it is likely over or over for good in many areas of the East. So here is a look where things stand with the highest totals for the 2025-2026 season by state reported from sites in our official snowfall database.

Coming May 15th, mandatory water restrictions will go into effect in #Charlotte due to the #drought. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In alignment with regional partners, Charlotte Water will implement Mandatory Water Restrictions (Low Inflow Protocol Stage 2) beginning Friday, May 15, 2026, due to ongoing dry conditions. Customers are asked to reduce non-essential water use to help protect the region’s water supply. Charlotte Water asks all customers to adhere to the following mandatory conservation actions:  Irrigate lawns and landscapes no more than two days per week, between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesday and Saturday Even-numbered addresses: Wednesday and Sunday Residential swimming pools may be topped off only on Thursdays and Sundays, between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Customers may not: Wash vehicles at home Fill residential swimming pools Operate water features that do not support aquatic life Power wash surfaces for non-essential purposes Hold charity or fundraising car wash events   Additional recommended actions include: Reduce indoor and outdoor water use Water lawns with no more than one inch of water per week (including rainfall) Identify and repair water leaks as quickly as possible   Charlotte Water customers are permitted to: Use drip irrigation, soaker hoses, or hand-water plants and landscaping Use commercial car wash facilities. SCFC to lift burning ban for all counties Friday: Officials urge vigilance while burning outdoors as drought conditions persist COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission will lift the State Forester's Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 7 a.m., Friday, May 1. @BCrawford247 That is true. With the 9 game SEC slate and Clemson every year the other 2 non conference games on the schedule are going to have to be much inferior non P4 competition going forward I’d imagine.

@Cmill_95 Getting to a bowl game annually considering the threshold is the minimum given what the job pays, IMO. With the SEC moving to a 9-game slate, that does get tougher for the South Carolinas.

Yes, 9-win seasons at South Carolina should be celebrated. Settling for one of those every few years with a 4-8 tossed in-between is not acceptable, however. Not when the HC is being paid top-20 in the sport & football drives the boat.

SCFC to lift burning ban for 7 more counties Thursday COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission will lift the State Forester's Burning Ban for an additional seven counties, effective at 7 a.m., Thursday, April 30. Agency officials believe the combination of rain and elevated relative humidity stretching from the Midlands to the Upstate warrant removing Edgefield, Fairfield, Newberry, Lexington, McCormick, Richland and Saluda counties from outdoor burning restrictions. Twenty-seven counties remain subject to the ban, however, highlighting the elevated fire danger that remains in a majority of the state (see map at right). “We’re seeing relative humidities increase across the state each day as well as good RH recovery overnight, which raises the moisture level in finer forest fuels,” said SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones. “Sustained winds and gusts are lower too, and the prospect of even more rain across greater portions of the state over the next week could help us get out of what has been an extended period of fire danger this year.” Citizens who may plan to conduct outdoor burning of residential yard debris or prescribed burns in counties not subject to the burning ban must still notify the Forestry Commission before doing so: Residential yard debris burning State law requires citizens who live in unincorporated areas to notify the Forestry Commission before burning outdoors. In most cases, the law applies to burning leaves, limbs and branches that people clean up from their yards. Citizens who do live in city/town limits must still abide by any burning ordinances in their local jurisdictions. Carolina Alert: Public safety incident at Blossom and Assembly on the Columbia campus. No eminent danger to the community but roads are partially blocked. Avoid the area and obey officials.

Another wave of leftover energy from the West will move in overnight into tomorrow morning. The latest HRRR is aggressive with it but model guidance has not done well at all handling these leftover features. Yesterday it was to weak with the energy, today it was to aggressive with it. So we will see how it handles it this time. A rainstorm moves in this weekend for a section of the Southeast. This will bring a good bit of rain but basically ruin any outdoor activities planned for Saturday.
