The climate law passed in 2019, and if I'm reading this ridiculous thing right, @GovKathyHochul is arguing they need until 2030 to enact the regs it requires. Even by the glacial standards of her do nothing administration, 11 years is nuts empirereportnewyork.com/climate-action…

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
Earlier this week, I broke fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody, Department of Correction staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place. In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity. May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.

I'm not judging the homeless man nor the officers. It's not my place. What I am observing, as I have countless times riding the subway daily, is the shuffling of people along with no effort to actually address actual underlying issues.

@DannyInTransit Nah, only the R62s are hot, but I was referring to the size of the order and the enumeration of every IRT line other than the 7. Are they replacing the NTTs?

Here's to an end to Hot Car Season
Dan Garodnick@DanGarodnick

Big news: @MTA & @GovKathyHochul today announced RFP from rail car manufacturers for the largest subway car contract in history. It would replace up to 2,390 cars on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 trains. (That's more cars than the Chicago & Massachusetts Transit Authorities combined.)

@DannyInTransit Wait, so this isn’t just to replace the R62 fleet, but also the non-R188 NTTs? Aren’t they a bit new for end of life?

👀 👀 👀 🚇 🚇 🚇 Congestion relief & capital investments are paying off for millions of New Yorkers, commuters & visitors from around the world How about let's make these open gangway cars to add seats, boost standing room & stop subway surfing? Comfort, capacity & safety 🤞

MTA Chair Janno Lieber in the agency’s sunset park testing facility this AM announcing an RFP for its largest order of new subway cars ever. The 2,300 new cars will replace most of the A Division trains — the numbered lines.

Self driving taxis will further reduce parking, allowing more infill. Nice. What will the infill do? Increase travel demand in a fixed amount of street space. So we’ll end up with self-driving gridlock, and regret having disinvested in space-efficient buses and trains.
Harrison Finberg@harrisonfinberg

Infill may trend this direction over the next 20 years as self driving cars take over. No valuable real estate on parking, you send your car to go park somewhere ugly and out of sight or use cheap robot taxis.

Transportation Alternatives
"It’s a shock to learn just how few parking meters New York City actually has. Philip Miatkowski, a policy expert at the activist group Transportation Alternatives, told me there are a mere 80,000 metered spots out of 3 million — 2.6 percent"

I’ve lost count of how many meetings I’ve taken in the last year where a med student told me they had to cancel their plans to practice in a rural area due to the Trump Administration capping loans, cutting GRAD PLUS, and/or weakening PSLF.

New York City Congestion Department
Wait, how many times did you say that a few community boards support destroying the city and manufacturing congestion? Did you change your mind? This is how the city looks like when its departments are being captive by a few communist organisations that don’t care about anyone.
Danny Pearlstein@DannyInTransit

Council members should of course want buses to be fast and to save riders lots of time but, at the end of the day, the mayor controls the streets, not the people captive to the loudest cranks on the community board
