📢 New Research: Burnout Profiles among Esports Players 📢 Burnout appears to be an ever-growing issue among competitive and professional esports players. Our recent open-access study in the @JSportsSci examines the burnout profiles among esports players and their associations with mental toughness and resilience. Key Findings: 1️⃣ Burnout Profiles: We identified three distinct burnout risk profiles—Low Burnout Risk (33.8%), Medium Burnout Risk (28.0%), and High Burnout Risk (38.3%)—highlighting the prevalence of burnout symptoms in esports. 2️⃣ Mental Toughness and Resilience: Players with higher levels of mental toughness and resilience reported significantly lower levels of burnout, offering potential protective factors against mental ill-health in esports. 3️⃣ Reduced Sense of Accomplishment: High Burnout Risk and Medium Burnout Risk appear to be differentiated by players who reported higher levels of ‘Reduced Sense of Accomplishment’. Players reporting lower levels of accomplishment may be an early indicator of potentially developing burnout. 🚨New Esports Research: Defining Elite Esports Athletes🚨 How should we define elite esports athletes? We are excited to announce the publication of our latest open-access research in the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology. We set out to provide clarity on how "elite" esports athletes were defined across various research studies and provide three key outcomes: 1⃣A Definition: “…we conceptualise elite e’athletes as individuals who compete at the highest level for their esport.” 2⃣An Initial Elite Clarification System: We introduce a 2-step classification system that considers both the highest level of competition and success within that level to better define elite status in esports (pictured below). 3⃣Guidelines for Future Research: We recommend new reporting guidelines to help researchers provide more detailed and consistent definitions of elite esports sample characteristics, facilitating more meaningful comparisons and insights (pictured below) We hope this research provides a critical step towards standardising the field and improving the quality of research in esports. A big thank you to my co-authors @benjamintsharpe, Patricia C. Jackman, @cswannpsych & @KyleJMBennett for their incredible contributions to this work! 📖 Read the full article here: #abstract" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

Exercise can be more powerful than drugs. Mounting evidence shows aerobic exercise is more effective at easing mild-to-moderate depression, stress, and anxiety than medication or therapy. But resistance training also improves depressive symptoms. And the dose of exercise needed to see benefits is incredibly small. Just two 25-minute resistance training sessions per week can significantly reduce depression symptoms, with results that are more than double the effectiveness of typical antidepressants like SSRIs. This isn’t to say nobody should use medication to treat their mental health conditions—SSRIs can be beneficial for some people. But since exercise can have similar or better benefits on mental health along with the added benefits on bone, muscle and metabolism—without any of the side effects—it seems like a no-brainer. In episode 94 of the FMF podcast, listen to @BioLayne discuss why resistance training is essential for mental health. youtu.be/nyZlFBJOuh4?si…

The antidepressant effects of exercise are comparable to SSRIs One study found the following... Men with major depressive disorder or general anxiety disorder did two 25-minute resistance training sessions/week for 8 weeks Here's what happened: Depression symptoms improved with an effect size of 1.7 For some background • 0.2 is a small effect size • 0.5 is modest • Anything >0.8 is large 1.7 is MASSIVE (SSRIs have an effect size 0.3-0.8)

#GXWIN
