Speaking at the engagement session hosted jointly by ECIC and @MEMSA_ZA on Thursday, 19 March 2026, ECIC Senior Economist, Nezo Sobekwa, said a significant shift in the trajectory of Africa’s mining sector is underway. He highlighted that a growing number of African governments are adopting firm policies which reflect a change in their stance regarding the extraction of the continent’s minerals and their subsequent export outside of Africa in raw form. Nezo noted that this policy change signals a decisive move toward value addition and industrialisation in the mining sector across Africa, and one that places SMEs at the centre of the mining value chain. He emphasised that MEMSA members and SMEs should seize this opportunity and rise to the occasion with urgency and intent, by working to meaningfully build their capacity to process minerals, even at a small scale. #ECIC #Mining #SMEs #smallbusinessdevelopment #Africa #TheAfricaWeWant #miningsector #exportfinance #creditinsurance #rawminerals

𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗖 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗦𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 ECIC and @MEMSA_ZA are jointly hosting a practical session on ‘Expanding Mining Equipment Exports Beyond South Africa’ on Thursday, 19 March 2026, at the ECIC offices in Centurion. The workshop, which is aimed at MEMSA members, will bring together active exporters and mining equipment manufacturers with a view to building sector awareness as well as an understanding of the specific challenges facing mining equipment exporters. It will also demonstrate why ECIC is their ECA partner of choice. ECIC already supports exporters in the mining equipment sector and this event will provide a platform to explore collaborative strategies with MEMSA to expand the sector’s footprint across borders. The topics that will be covered include: • Accessing new markets across the rest of Africa, emerging and global markets. • De-risking cross-border transactions by providing insurance against risk of not being paid for an export contract, or of not being able to recover the costs of performing that contract because of certain political and commercial events. • Strengthening global competitiveness and facilitating trade by crowding in financiers for small, medium, and large-scale export transactions. • Providing partial cover to your bank in support of working capital and contract bonds linked to eligible export contracts in lieu of cash collateral. #ECIC #MEMSA #mining #miningequipment #miningexports #miningindustry #Africanbusiness #AfCFTA #SouthAfricanbusiness #exportfinance #creditinsurance

As 2026 moves swiftly ahead, it is an opportune time to reflect on what we achieved in the previous financial year. As stated by Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Zuko Godlimpi in the ECIC Integrated Report for 2025: “Together, through strong partnerships between government, the private sector and institutions such as the ECIC, we can build a more resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive economy.” You can access the full Integrated Report here: bit.ly/4b4nwFe #ECIC #SouthAfrica #African #economicdevelopment #SouthAfricanbusiness #Africanbusiness #AfricaRising #TheAfricaWeWant

ECIC Acting CEO, Ntshengedzeni Gilbert Maphula, was part of a delegation led by the South African Presidency on a State Visit to Brazil this week. South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa and His Excellency, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, witnessed the signing of agreements to elevate economic cooperation, including on the Tourism Action Plan 2026-2029 and the Trade & Investment Promotion between the Brazilian Trade & Investment Promotion Agency. The visit also included the South Africa-Brazil Business Forum, which served as a platform to discuss further collaboration between the two countries, and the respective delegations also engaged on shared geopolitical priorities as members of the global south, including cooperation in BRICS, IBSA, the G77+China, the G20, and the United Nations. As part of the “Brazil–South Africa Cooperation under BRICS”, ECIC was involved in the BRICS Reinsurance Task Force after the 2025 BRICS Summit. The Brazilian Presidency advanced the BRICS agenda on reinsurance cooperation by convening inclusive dialogues such as these, framing reinsurance as a strategic tool for resilience, and consolidating concrete proposals for future work. Although no agreement was reached on a specific initiative, the Task Force’s work demonstrated that BRICS countries are willing to explore innovative mechanisms, including investments in technical cooperation through initiatives such as the BRICS Reinsurance Risk Lab. The State Visit, which concludes today, 11 March 2026, opened the door for more frequent exchange amongst reinsurance regulators from the two countries, with the aim of deepening understanding of market differences and similarities, as well as identifying the most feasible areas for cooperation. #ECIC #BRICS #SAinBrazil

Speaking on a panel titled ‘Financing Africa’s Development’ at the @EnergyIndaba this afternoon, 4 March, 2026, in Cape Town, South Africa, ECIC Senior Underwriter, Lebohang Mosetu, highlighted that environmental and social risks remain one of the most underestimated factors that contribute to projects being un-bankable and prevent them from reaching financial close. He also referred to the fact that some risk is now being resolved, as a result of countries on the continent adapting relevant regulations to make negotiations between commercial banks, IDBs and DFIs. #ECIC #EnergyIndaba #AfricaEnergyIndaba #energyfinance #projectfinance #riskmanagement #exportfinance #Africa

ECIC Senior Underwriter, Lebohang Mosetu, will be participating in a panel on ‘Financing Africa’s Development’ at the @EnergyIndaba 2026 in Cape Town, South Africa, on Wednesday, 4 March, at 14h25 CAT. Energy projects in Africa commonly struggle to access the financing they need. There are myriad reasons for this. Often the terms and conditions imposed by lenders are focused on developed country investment models and they become quite onerous in the context of Africa. It is also difficult to service the debt when it is denominated in a foreign currency that is dissimilar from the currency used in the tariff structures applied to new generation projects. With a view to finding solutions to these and other significant financing challenges, the panellists will be discussing the following questions: 1. What innovative financing mechanisms and investment strategies are suitable to mobilize large-scale capital for Africa’s energy transition? 2. What can be done to ensure that the terms and conditions attached to the funding are appropriate to the African context of the project? 3. What are the challenges and opportunities in accessing finance and fostering a conducive investment environment to accelerate Africa’s shift towards a low-carbon, resilient energy future? #ECIC #EnergyIndaba #energyfinance #energyinvestment #Africanenergy #energysolutions

By providing political and commercial risk cover that most private insurers would deem non-acceptable risk or outside their underwriting criteria, the #ECIC supports South African capital-equipment suppliers operating in a tough economic environment. This cover enables local exporters to offer decent payment terms to overseas buyers who are constrained by cash flow. In addition, when ECIC insures the working-capital lines that local banks give South African manufacturers, they can borrow against their order books instead of tying up extensive collateral. As the Corporation gives banks capital relief under Basel III, the cost of funding comes down considerably and this makes a significant difference when you’re competing on price in a global arena.
