It has been an amazing transplant year at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. We surpassed the volume of previous years. Our abdominal transplant programs completed milestones in liver (322), kidney (506), kidney/pancreas (52), and pancreas alone (2). New innovations abound - robotic kidney transplantation and living donation, machine perfusion of organs, advances in organ retrieval, transplant oncology, training and educational excellence, and research initiatives that will shape the future of transplantation. Our programs have continued to provide our patients with excellence in clinical outcomes, hope, and unparalleled experience. 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝟏 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐬 is a chronic autoimmune disease caused by the immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. After beta cells are destroyed, lifelong insulin replacement is required. Physiological consequences of inadequate handling of glucose are microvascular and macrovascular dysfunction, affecting multiple tissues. Manifestations include retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, coronary vascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, poor wound healing, and susceptibility to infections. I am very thrilled to see after a long time my third book as an editor published. This book bridges regenerative hepatology and transplant medicine. It illustrates the state of the art of clinical liver transplantation, as well as of the progress of regenerative medicine investigations aiming at the bioengineering, regeneration, and repair of the liver.
