I was so happy to join Varushniak, a vibrant festival organized by the Belarusian diaspora in Warsaw and dedicated to our traditional Kupalle celebration with flower wreaths, a bonfire and songs. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. We truly had a wonderful time. 🤍❤️🤍

@MagnusFratus @tanayj Egypt and Australia are ranked roughly the same by FIFA, and most bookmakers give them similar odds of progressing. Australia will get past Egypt. Australians play smarter football. Argentina need to get past Cape Verde before they can face mighty Australia.

The World Cup knockout rounds bracket is set. The left side is slightly stronger but overall a pretty balanced bracket. Of the 6 pre-tournament favourites, 3 are in each half. My pick of the Round of 32 ties: - Netherlands v Morocco - Brazil v Japan - Mexico v Ecuador - Ivory Coast v Norway

I live in Australia. Many football (soccer) clubs were started by Croatian communities in the 1950s and 1960s. Every major city had one or two Croatian clubs, while cities such as Sydney and Melbourne had several. The best known clubs are Sydney United and Melbourne Knights. There are well-known Australian players of Croatian descent : Mark Viduka, Ned Zelić, Mark Bosnich, Tony Popović, Mile Jedinak, David Zdrilić, Ante Miličić and many others. Tony Popović is currently the coach of the Australian national team. Interestingly, many Croatian community-based clubs had words such as Croatia, Croat or Knights in their names. Many also used the Croatian chequerboard pattern in their colours, even during the Yugoslav era. Some had Split in their name, reflecting the fact that many Croatian migrants came to Australia from the coastal regions of Croatia. But my favourite team when I was growing up was Adelaide City. It was an Italian community based club, once known as Juventus, and its colours were black and white stripes. After Australia, I support Croatia in this world cup.

East Asia and Oceania should form a single confederation. It is awkward for teams from West Asia and East Asia to play against each other when there is a seven- or eight-hour time difference between Japan or eastern Australia and countries such as Jordan or Syria. Besides, Japan, South Korea and Australia are the driving forces in the AFC, with Iran being the main force in West Asia. That is about it. I see no benefit for countries in eastern time zones having to travel across seven or eight time zones to play in Middle Eastern heat of around 40°C. East Asia plus Oceania 4 direct spots in which South Korea, Japan, Australia, New Zealand will be often favourites. But China and Indonesia are getting stronger too.

@DrewPavlou A line has to be drawn somewhere when making a decision. You may think that 1–5 mm should not be considered offside, while others may think 1–5 cm should be allowed, and so on.

I welcome this rule. I do not like the inclusion of an extra 16 teams at the expense of quality. Do you really want to watch teams such as Iraq, with 0 points and a -11 goal difference, or Uzbekistan, with 0 points and a -9 goal difference? Do you really want the Asian Football Confederation to be awarded nine places? There are nine teams from the AFC. Only Australia, Japan and South Korea have won games - one each. Only two of the nine qualified for the round of 32. For me, the World Cup begins at the round of 32. This new technology is welcome. I have seen many technological changes introduced since I started watching World Cup matches in 1986. If VAR had existed back then, we would not have seen Maradona’s handball goal against England allowed to stand, Belgium sending the Soviet Union home after scoring twice from offside positions, and so many other clearly incorrect decisions. Get used to these good new changes.

I played soccer my entire life, since I could walk I had a soccer ball at my feet I know this is technically offside, but real ball knowers know it isn’t. It just isn’t. But this is not a new thing that these decisions have been changing games. It’s been happening for years VAR is necessary but it is also so incredibly flawed.

If it had been an Iranian player’s hand sticking out instead of his foot, it would not have been offside. If it had been his head, it would have been offside again. Why? Because an attacking player cannot legally score with his hand, but he can score with his foot, knee or head. But that is not what I wanted to write about. The rules are the rules, and every team knew them before the game. If you do not want to play by the rules, then go and play another game with your own made-up rules.

The current VAR rules are really stupid. VAR should only be taken account if it proves the original decision was wrong in a serious way. In cases that are borderline, the original decision need to stand. I have to add the current offside rules are bad too.

Iran had already been eliminated before Austria v Algeria kicked off. Iran were sitting in the final qualifying spot among the third-placed teams, with three points and a goal difference of zero, but after the earlier DR Congo v Uzbekistan match, DR Congo qualified and Iran were pushed down the table. Whatever happened in Austria v Algeria, Iran were out: if either team won, the winner would move to six points. If the match ended in a draw, both teams would finish on four points. Either way, Iran could no longer remain among the eight best third-placed teams.

Zero points, a -9 goal difference, and -3 per game for Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan are here only because the World Cup was expanded to 48 teams. In 2022, the AFC had four direct places plus one play-off place. In 2026, it has eight direct places plus one play-off place. Iraq, Uzbekistan and Jordan have been the worst-performing sides at this World Cup. The real world cup games just began in 1/32 round. Just go home.

This was not good for the development of the game in Australia. In practice, Australia had to play an intercontinental knockout qualifier every four years - effectively, only two truly competitive matches in a four-year cycle. Qualifiers in the OFC often ended 10–0, 15–0 or even 20–0 in Australia’s favour. The record was 31–0, achieved with what was effectively Australia’s second-best side. Then Australia would have to face the fifth-best nation from South America - Argentina with Diego Maradona and Gabriel Batistuta, or Uruguay. There was little interest towards soccer except for the final 2 play off games for which players playing in Europe would turn in every 4 years. What kind of qualifiers were this for Australia or any country that would be placed in a situation like this?

@passfirstmafia @BryanDFischer Also it was an easier path to World Cup Qualification under the previous system as Oceania didn't have a dedicated spot, but had to contest a playoff against a South American team that Australia rarely won.

Iran are out, regardless of the result of Algeria v Austria. The AFC is one of the weaker confederations. Eight Asian teams qualified for the tournament, but across their 24 group-stage matches they managed only three wins: one each by Australia, Japan and South Korea. Only two of the eight AFC teams - Australia and Japan - reached the Round of 32. Two weakest teams came from AFC - Iraq 0pts , goal difference -11; Uzbekistan 0pts , goal difference -9.

If you’re a Korea fan 🇰🇷 these are the only TWO games that matter now. We need Uzbekistan 🇺🇿 to TIE or BEAT Congo and Austria 🇦🇹 to beat Algeria. Algeria 🇩🇿 can beat Austria, but it has to be by two or more goals. This is it, ladies and gentlemen 🙄

Of course, you are stupid. I hold a PhD in applied maths, and I run probability models every day for different sports, including football. I am telling you that the rule is confusing and misleading. Many people, including referees, do not understand how this rule is applied. That is a fact. Wait until FIFA officials comment. So keep it in the back of your mind that some random bloke on social media told you that you were stupid - and he was right about you.

Iran's as their last minute goal vs Egypt was overturned by VAR denying them a crucial victory that would have guaranteed an advancement out of groups. The player was in an offsides position when the ball was played by the original shooter so he cannot play the ball on the rebound. That is if there is a deflection. There is an exception: If a defending player deliberately plays or controls the ball (such as attempting a back-pass or a controlled clearance) and it falls to you, the offside is reset, and you can legally play the ball. That obviously doesn’t happen here. It’s a clear deflection and rebound in this play and isn’t the defense gaining control and sending it to the originally offsides player. It’s the right call by VAR. Same reason a penalty or free kick taker can’t hit the ball first if they hit the post.
