Another set of #mountaingorilla twins reported in the Virunga National Park! Such exciting news!

A second rare set of twin mountain gorillas has been recorded in Virunga National Park in 2026. Following the twins born in the Bageni family in January, a new pair has now been observed in the Baraka family — an exceptionally rare event among mountain gorillas. The twins, believed to be one female and one male, are approximately two weeks old and are being closely monitored by field teams. This birth brings the Baraka family to 19 individuals and marks the seventh gorilla birth recorded in the Park since the start of the year. 📹 Virunga National Park

Great news! It is yet another #mountaingorilla baby!

Virunga National Park is pleased to announce that female Serundori gave birth to a male infant, joining the Masibo family.⁠ ⁠ Formed in October 2025 after splitting from the Kabirizi family, the group is led by the silverback Masibo, son of Kabirizi, who left the original group with 13 individuals. It is the first birth recorded since the family’s formation, bringing the troop to 15 individuals — an encouraging sign as they continue to stabilize in the Mikeno sector.⁠ ⁠ It is the sixth birth recorded in the park since January 2026, across five different families.⁠ ⁠⁠ We are grateful for the continued support of the European Union and UNESCO, which makes these conservation efforts possible.⁠ ⁠⁠📸 Virunga National Park⁠ #MountainGorillas #GorillaConservation #DRC @EU_Commission @EU_Partnerships @UNESCO

On March 3rd, the Bageni family twins reached two months — a historic milestone for Virunga National Park. They have been named Uzima and Urithi, symbols of life, survival, heritage, and legacy. Their mother, Mafuko, continues to show remarkable resilience, caring attentively for both infants despite the extra demands of twin care. The twins, clinging tightly to her, are beginning to make small movements and develop coordination. By the end of their third month, we hope they will begin to move independently for the first time. Our monitoring team remains fully committed, following the family’s movements and providing daily support during these crucial early months. During a routine monitoring mission on 20 February 2026, community trackers directly witnessed a mother gorilla giving birth to her baby in the Munyaga family. A remarkable moment that highlights the commitment of our field teams and their close monitoring of this iconic species.⁠ ⁠ Observations confirmed that the mother is Bilali and that her baby is a female.⁠ ⁠ Coming just three days after the previous birth in the same family, this new arrival brings the group to 14 individuals, reflecting encouraging growth for the Munyaga family and making the close succession of these two births particularly notable.⁠ ⁠ Since the beginning of 2026, this is the fifth gorilla birth recorded in the Park, an achievement made possible thanks to support from the European Union and UNESCO.⁠ 📸 Virunga National Park #WorldWildlifeDay #GorillaConservation #DRC⁠ @EU_Commission @EU_Partnerships @UNESCO
