@BurlHorniachek @FreyChristopher I'd say Marie represents courtly literature, not Arthuriana. She is often chosen for undergraduate surveys because her work is shorter and more accessible than most, including Chrétien.

@FreyChristopher It seems pretty odd to include to have Arthurian material represented by the Green Knight and Marie de France when the major Arthurian author of the period is Chrétien de Troyes. The Green Knight is a side story and Marie is just a far lesser writer.

This + Augustine’s Confessions = the reading for Tulsa’s honors course “The Long Middle Ages” that I’m teaching this semester.

This spurred me to order The Lais of Marie de France -- new to me.

The Woman and the Wolf in poet Marie de France’s “Bisclavret”. Virtually nothing is known of her life; both her name and its geographical specification come from manuscripts containing her works. However, one written description of her work and popularity from her era exists.
