We pay a lot of attention around here to the seniors…and why not? The last couple of years we’ve had senior-heavy teams that went on to great success. This upcoming season we will be bringing back three more seniors and they each will play an integral role in our success during the 25-26 season. BUT. C’mon, you knew there was a BUT coming. BUT...we would be tripping if we didn’t at least take a quick moment to acknowledge the offseason that our super soph Big Tree has had. Known to the outside world as Dontreyelle Johnson, this kid didn’t do anything but walk in as a freshman and secure major minutes, a starting role, and eventually a Regional Championship last year. Surrounded by flashy stars (hello, Marvin Schindler), All-Stars (Tyrese Jones) and 4 other seniors that will ALL be playing playing college ball this year, Tree just quietly went about his business, doing his job and securing the bag. “I knew I was in a great position when I got here. Those guys last year were just a great group. They took me in and let me know right away that they had my back. That helped a lot, because I knew I just had to go out and play my game.” This year will be a little different. Tree is no longer the new guy. He’s a grizzled veteran now, a guy that has cut down multiple nets and played in big games. He’s still surrounded by a ton of talent at Riley but will need to continue to develop his game and become an even bigger piece for the Cats this season if they will carry on the level of success we’ve grown accustomed to on the South Side. Head Coach Alex Daniel is not exactly concerned. “You know, Tree is just a guy that we have really trusted right from the beginning. He’s got a maturity about him and an understanding of the game that is kind of rare for any high school kid, let alone a young one like him. It makes it easy. Plus, he just really works his tail off. In season, out of season, we know Tree is putting in the work and we love that about him.” Others are beginning to notice, too, as Dontreyelle went out and had himself one heck of a summer, earning much attention from scouts on the recruiting trail. After a dominant performance recently at one of the top offseason showcases, the praise rolled in. “Someone I’ve been high on over the past year-Dontreyelle Johnson out of South Bend Riley,” said Kyler Staley, a scout for Prep Hoops. “He was his aggressive, physical self in the paint and on the glass, but what stood out most what his ability to create on the wing. It looks as though he has unlocked more of an ablilty to stretch the floor, and if that’s the case, South Bend Riley is going to be a dangerous team this season.” Dangerous indeed. We’ve got some super seniors coming back to anchor us. We’ve got some new faces that will make a huge impact. We’ve got some young guys coming up, looking to earn their place. And we have Tree. “It’s hard to not feel good about this upcoming season and he’s definitely a big part of that,” says Coach Daniel. “He’s just a guy that’s going to do whatever you need him to do and all we need him to do is just be himself. He might not lead us in scoring or highlights or whatever else, but he’s going to be a huge part of what we do this season. He’s a player.” Dontreyelle Johnson. Remember the name. He’s really just getting started…but has already earned his place. He is also still working, all the time, regardless. “I don’t even think of it as work, honestly. I just love the game. More than anything else though, I just want to win.” Congratulations, Tree, on an outstanding offseason of preparation for what will no doubt be an amazing 2025-26 season! The Wildcats are in great hands with you around this year and beyond...and we can’t wait to see all that will accomplish in your career here at Riley! Now, get back to work, the grind continues!
