The 2.5 million were just the ones watching via an official NASA broadcast. Many more, likely millions, were watching local broadcasts or CNN.
I don't remember what my school used, but it almost certainly wasn't NASA, and probably wasn't CNN. I grew up in New England, and Christa McAuliffe was from NH, so it was probably a local broadcast for us, and for others in New England and surrounding areas.

99.9% of people who "experienced" the Challenger disaster saw it on replay and now remember it as live. Almost NO ONE was watching. Everyone thinks they were. It's a fascinating collective false memory.

Yes, we were in school. We were in school watching the launch...in school. Because there was a teacher on board. Teachers thought we would have more of a connection to the event knowing that a normal person, just like other normal people we knew, was going to space.

@JustEric The OP is 100% correct. Kids were in school and were not watching the takeoff of the Challenger. Word spread as the news got out and the national nightly news was the first time most people saw the video.

My dash cam has been randomly protecting videos from deletion for no apparent reason since I got it a few months ago.
I finally figured out why.
It has voice commands, and apparently, "fucking idiot!" sounds close enough to, "lock the video." 😬
