Hi! I'm Dave Plummer. You might remember me from such Windows components as Task Manager, Windows Pinball, Calc, ZIPFolders, Product Activation, etc. Cheers!

I'm so old I wrote that! That's assuming it's the Windows version, which is the one I worked on. The Win9x game, art, and original code, were done by Maxis/Cinematronics. I ported it to Windows NT, converted the x86 asm to C, made it work on RISC, and so on. Success has many fathers, and all credit should really go to the original designers... I'm just the fun uncle that brought it to the masses.

I added a live LED preview to my NightDriverLED.com dashboard. It's not just a UI - it's a complete CRUD interface in C++ using Crow to implement the API endpoints that drives it all.

@davepl1968 1) If you don't have a choice, it's not consent. 2) No, I never agreed to anything of the sort. 3) Driver's licenses are unconstitutional.

It has nothing to do with DUI being the heinous crime that it is and everything to do with implied consent. When you get a driver's license, you grant this. You consent to blowing or losing your license, your choice. But the point is you do it in advance. When you get a mortgage, you do not, which is why they can't just come into your house.

@davepl1968 im sorry but this looks shit. it is a terrible design and it disobeys every single cumulative UX/UI design principles that has been established since the dawn of the first GUIs.

I cranked out this very complicated nested-tables management UI with Codex in about 3 hours. I absolutely HATE creating browser UI, so I'm hugely impressed and relieved by what Codex/Claude is able to do in plain CSS and HTML!

@dsobeski I don't know, I'm a busy man, I haven't checked! I suspect not, but it's not really a phone UI. I guess I could look at how Unifi handles such things on mobile, its a similar thing...

@rolandhellstern The smart women laugh because they get the joke. Those are the ones you want. The ones who are stack ranking your social currency? Not so much.

@davepl1968 Wrong, getting genuine laughter from other people shows you have social status and/or social currency. Women laugh when those criteria are met.

@davepl1968 LOL, I follow you but you have some strange takes. If people really followed the old saw of 'Do what you love and you'll never have to "work" ', welfare roles would be far higher than now. Only a rich person could repackage it this way.

You'll find that most people who are rich got rich doing something they love, and they continue doing it long after they no longer need the money. Because they love it, after all. What the cynic sees as merely chasing another dollar is more likely how the creative person "keeps score" and gets confirmation that their output is meaningful.

@jvert I could be off by 10 years in my recollection of the conversation, but you're still not wrong. I forgot about SEH and C++ exceptions. Always loved me some __finally.

@davepl1968 In 1996 the real answer for system code should have been some combination of 1. Microsoft had no stl implementation 2. Inability to deal gracefully with memory allocation failures 3. Incompatibility between win32 SEH and C++ exceptions

I had this conversation at Microsoft in 1996: Me: "Why do we have our own pointer array code?" Mgr: "Because it's solid and well tested." Me: "So is vector<> in the STL!" Mgr: "Devs don't know the STL" Me: "They're devs, they should know the STL!" Mgr: "That's great, but they don't, so no." And so we continued to use and write all of our own containers and so on. Because the STL was scary.

i used to roll my eyes whenever senior devs said "just use the standard library." i was wrong. they were right. so much third-party stuff is genuinely unnecessary.

I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took. Thank you for getting us to this point.

I can palm a basketball, but my wife is 14" shorter than me, which is to say, she cannot. She would also like an MX Master 4 mouse that is the same as the regular one, just smaller. Not a cheesy laptop version, but a real quality MX in a smaller form factor. Assuming you don't have giant man hands, any recommendations on a great mouse for smaller girl hands?

I feel validated that people hate GIMP now. Like 10 years ago in the 2010s everybody would recommend it like it's the best software ever, but when I tried it I found the UI insanely shit & confusing to work with. I quickly went back to paint .net and I still use it to this day.

Thanks, Windows. I love it when you randomly change the default audio to a mic that doesn't exist so that I spend 30 minutes recording only to have a muted video.

Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg deserve far more criticism for actively enabling Trump. From killing newspaper endorsements to ending fact-checking on Meta, they abandoned all principles for access and tax cuts. They are directly funding the erosion of our democratic norms
