Woke types flatter and sell these types on all their fantasies. Immense control of processes, greater money (from "modern audiences"), safety and risk aversion (via HR), and cultural status from being on the right side of history

The reality is ‘woke’ is a symptom, not a cause. The intrusion of specific kinds of financial and corporate thinking alongside real broad money-market forces after 2008 was the cause of much of this, as it brought about DEI as part of ESG/SRI shit. Then, and not really separate, you have the Moneyballification of things, where corporate leadership got taken over by ‘money people.’
The reason games suck now is the same reason everything sucks. There are no new IPs and it’s all remakes for the same reason candy companies haven’t made new candy and just remix old brands like Reeses.
2008 fucked everything, centralized everything, and ruined everything.
In a very real sense the reason millennials and zoomers can’t buy homes is the same reason games suck, movies suck, and a lot of food sucks.

Wokeness certainly made video games worse in narrative terms, but that's a much more recent phenomenon than the larger trend of games simply getting worse in general, which began in earnest during the 7th console generation. For first time, broadly speaking, we were seeing games being dumbed down compared to their predecessors, both in mechanical terms + with Hollywood-style art direction & writing optimized for mass appeal, and that has only accelerated since then. This was already happening before the mid-2010s mainstreaming of wokeness. Now, everyone is hyperaware of Woke Themes in art & media, especially in video games, but comparatively fewer people are talking about games simply being dumber, designed by and for dumber people, according to dumber standards. Games without a hint of wokeness in them still have these problems. The average "anti-woke" gamer would happily accept these lower standards as long as nothing they'd recognize as woke is present, that's how low the bar is. But to return to the original point, I don't know how we explain something like making the Halo ring a hideous greebled mess by citing wokeness. Those cracks were already forming 20 years ago, and it is in part due to developers feeling greater freedom to overdesign and overcook visual elements with bigger budgets and more advanced tech. The same thing happened to movies, music, anime, etc. When your creative process is on such strong autopilot and has so few meaningful stumbling blocks, you can run yourself off a cliff churning out stuff that looks superficially "good" but isn't well-crafted at all.
