This is Anna Aksamit. Anna is a 30 year old Polish model who lives in Milan. She was on her way to a supermarket near Porta Romana (very central and normally safe area) on Friday afternoon at 2pm when she came across a group of 7 to 8 men, who were thin and visibly intoxicated. She attempted to evade them by crossing the road but they chased her, surrounded her, molested her and began punching her in the face and abdomen. The men worked as a pack. They beat her and threatened to rape her and she was only saved when a passerby intervened. Anna is unable to give a detailed description of the men but, interestingly, was able to identify her Good Samaritan as “Italian”. I was last in Milan a few weeks ago. This was once a grand and significant city but it is now haunted by large groups of thin and hostile men, many of whom do not look like they are Italian and do not speak Italian. They make many women feel unsafe. They used to hang out in clusters near the central train station but appear to be spreading out into other areas of the city, possibly because the police presence at Milan Central Station is now so heavy. It is possible that the group that attacked Anna is actually are actually Italian but the odds are against it. For a woman to be unable to walk to the supermarket in broad daylight without being attacked and threatened with rape is just appalling and a new low for Milan.
