@barneyronay Before the tournament began I wrote that England at the World Cup would not be Joga Bonito. Those first 15 minutes of the 2nd half were not that, they were something better. an intense, unrelenting wave of attacking play that although I have not seen from England felt like them.

And don’t say “I believe we will win…” because that’s the dumbest stupidest chant of all time. It holds the US back and anybody who sings it is a loser

@starsnstripesfc Songs are great part of supporting a team but what happens on the pitch is always more important than the songs off of it. That being said, I always hated ‘I Believe We Can Win’

Hot take: #USMNT  fans don’t really need creative chants, we could just sing popular American songs and be very loud. Same outcome

@ChesnoidGaming I don’t think we can be mad about the ad money, we have seen the monetization of the game down to shirt sleeve sponsers. What we should be angry about is how FIFA is using the gusie of player safety. How do we trust they will make choices in the best interest of the game

Manzambi > Also, it only happened because the hydration break killed Bosnia's momentum and Switzerland made a triple sub with full instructions for the whole squad but you know, FIFA/FOX gotta make that ad revenue 🤷‍♂️

FIFA’s new hydration breaks were implemented to help players stay cool in what could be the hottest World Cup in history. But these mandatory pauses have sparked criticism. apnews.com/article/fifa-w…

@sgevans Does that not show that US fans prefer sport in the evening? Premier League start at 7am EST and the champions league final was done by 3pm

For some context - Qatar v Switzerland....attracted almost double CBS's audience for the UEFA Champions League final. Even Australia v Turkey, which finished at 2am on the East Coast attracted over three-times the average EPL game in the US.

@njh287 It’s a difficult concept because in get what you’re saying how does the new fan understand that Austria is better than Jordan. Maybe some of the intrigue should be fans discovering who is good and who they like rather than thinking they need to know who to root for.

I hear everyone saying the FIFA world soccer rankings are meaningless. Most rankings are! (Week 1 CFB AP rankings!). But it gives some directional info for a novice fan that would be surprised to learn that, like, The Netherlands are a top global team, for example

@samesfandiari There’s still a money grab. It has nothing to do with the extra teams though.

Before the World Cup started, I was quasi annoyed they went to 48 teams. Felt like a money grab the way CFb playoff and March madness expansion are. They are definitely still that, but I can’t say I’m not enjoying the hell out of it. 4 games a day. Celebrations all day long. Great summer time stuff

@clarkh1963 @njh287 But not the same way cfb rankings do. I think if you were to give fans a choice between ending the year at world ranked 1 or beating thier biggest national team rival there would be no contest.

Should the World Cup broadcasts show each nation's FIFA world soccer ranking, like a college FB/BB game? This England-Croatia game is #4 vs. #11, so a close match Cape Verde-Spain was #67 v. #2 I'm sure FIFA has rules for stuff like this. It'd help instantly convey narrative!

@f790b0RE6rafMds @usmntonly Yep, but that is when it’s deemed to be needed, not premeditated. It feels like it’s been picked to happen for every game because FIFA can’t separate player safety from commercial opportunity.

Mauricio Pochettino said that ‘American sports reward losers’ when asked about the style of play in top European nations vs. in the U.S. 😯🇺🇸 QUESTION: “We know how England, France, Spain play… Players from countries with a strong tradition have a recognizable style. What is the style of the US team? What kind of football do the Americans want to play?” ANSWER: “Their culture is playful. They want to play. We told them, “Guys, playing soccer is one thing, competing is another.” They’re two completely different sports. They grow up in a culture of playing. Why? If you start in MLS and you haven’t won a game in three months and you’re at the bottom, what’s the consequence if there’s no promotion or relegation, no international competition? American sports reward losers! But soccer is different: if you reward those who don’t win… If you don’t have goals, you don’t fight. If I lose, what happens? Nothing. They just fire the coach. Also, the American player is disciplined. But with a sense of complacency that isn’t good in soccer. It took us a year and a half to change that mentality.” [EL PAIS]

@Odriozolite @ESPNFC Can you average it out for all games and split it between games that the WBGT would have justified a break under the FIFPRO guidelines of 32 C
