Ahead of the Oct. 29 elections in Tanzania over 83 opposition members have been disappeared, more than 600 have been jailed, 5+ have been killed. Chadema, ACT-Wazalendo presidential candidates have been disqualified in the widest wave of repression in Tanzania this century.

In Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, presidents have contracted criminal security agents to abduct citizens and silence dissent. Abductees face torture, sexual violence with some found dead or missing permanently. Kenyan activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo were abducted in Uganda and remain missing. In Tanzania, government critic and diplomat Humphrey Polepole is the latest person to be abducted, and disappeared. Uganda, and Tanzania have hundreds of political prisoners in prison or missing. As East African citizens, we must rise with LOVE and COURAGE to reclaim our countries from mafia leaders. #JumuiyaNiYetu #SolidarityEA

What does it mean to resist? To stand together across borders? And to decolonise the very spaces where we fight for freedom? Last week we held a convening which brought together grassroots organisers, academics, and activists to answer these questions - and ask new ones.

Art is a snapshot of culture in a time period. We’ve seen that art whether street art or mainstream shape our understanding of movements, particularly those of dissent. Join us this Saturday as we dig into what protest art looks like in times of youth uprising.

100 days on! Storming parliament on June 25th was collective catharsis for the youth, a feeling that Frantz Fanon refers to as people reclaiming their state and country. Ukombozi Review is an archive & reservoir of memory of this uprising.
