It was a nice change having our vet call ME on the weekend for once - this time looking for someone to take on an orphaned foal whose dam sadly passed and her nurse mare had rejected her.
There are a lot of people behind this little filly’s story. Her breeder made the hard call to give her a chance instead of euthanizing. And the nurse mare’s amazing owners poured themselves into trying to save her, all while grieving the loss of their own foals. At a certain point, they knew they were exhausted and didn’t have the ideal setup or time to give her what she needs, and selflessly chose what was best for her, not what was easiest for them.
They didn’t hand her off lightly, and they wouldnt’t hand her to just anyone - which makes their trust mean that much more.
Between two bottle calves and a bottle lamb, we figured… what’s one more? Trifecta achieved.
This sweet little Appendix filly is settling in well. She’s going to take a lot of time and work, but we’re grateful for the opportunity to give her a place where she can grow, thrive, and just be a horse.
