To understand what I mean, independently of the decentralized nature of the tech, is more like a unfortunate political and sociological expression of the educated class as it exists today under the conditions of 'very late capitalism'. Nate Silver, and just yesterday, Max Read, has called it Blueskyism: < "Silver lists three “essential qualities” to “Blueskyism”: Smalltentism: “Aggressive policing of dissent… Censoriousness” Credentialism: “Appeals to authority… Centering of the suitability of the speaker based on his or her credentials and/or identity characteristics” Catastrophism: “Humorless, scoldy neuroticism” > That is what was affecting social coop back then, perhaps still now. I'm assuming, given the social milieu attracted to these platforms, it is not a problem that can rapidly be solved. Between a pluralistic but admittedly more 'right-tending' centralized Twitter, and a culturally tiring policing of speech on 'perfectly decentralized platform', we should be able to create old-fashioned pluralistic conversations. BUT, since it is actually so difficult to do in the current moment of cultural disintegration, people are moving to more confidential cozyweb tech such as telegram or signal groups, and foregoing more public forms of debate. Attention must be embedded in ethical and relational conditions that allow people to remain in right relationship across difference. Without such conditions being present, attention can still be captured, manipulated, or weaponised.
