This was a very good question from Ryan - why does the Universe on the largest scales resemble the Universe on the smallest scales? The answer, for the case of the distribution of galaxies on the sky, is that the pattern we see has its origin in quantum mechanical fluctuations during inflation - before the hot big bang (at least according to inflationary cosmology, which is the most widely accepted model at present). Hail Mary is a very good film by the way :-)

At @CommonsSITC I asked the Science Minister to confirm that postdocs would not be paying the price of the @STFC_Matters overspend. He said "there is nothing to stop that being addressed" I hope that is a yes!

Great work by the parliamentary select committee on the science funding crisis in the UK and clear instructions on how to resolve it (quickly!). Our political system is much maligned, but here is an example of it working very well indeed.

There has been widespread concern about the funding of specific scientific research programmes. The Committee heard evidence from members of the scientific community and has written to DSIT and UKRI

Absolutely. The system we have in place works well in my view and delivers - there is of course room for improvement and reprioritisation, but it’s complex and delicate. This says to me that changes need to be made very carefully, and nobody can argue that this has been done carefully!

@ProfBrianCox Thanks for sharing - Physics definitely at the pointy end of this because of the immediate cuts; but life sciences also peering down the barrel with the uncertainty

An excellent overview of the funding crisis in the UK across many areas of physics. I believe there is a disconnect between MPs and UKRI because ministers did not intend to damage the research base in this way. Rather the problems stem from decisions made too quickly and without proper consultation or impact assessment at UKRI level. It now falls to parliament to encourage a rethink.
Lucien Heurtier@LucienHeurtier

📢A striking disconnect emerged this week over the STFC funding crisis. 🧪🔭 #UKRI framed the problem as a budget constraint, while ministers, Lords and MPs stressed protecting curiosity-driven research. Full narrative📝 lheurtier.github.io/STFCcuts2.html

@robinhanson Thanks for spotting that. I may have said it by mistake - but it also looks to me like a clunky edit (cuts in and out of a close up) which has missed something out or unintentionally changed the meaning. Either way I’ll ask them to correct.
