On my way home from my 11th Financial Cryptography (fc26.ifca.ai). It is still one of the best conferences for cryptocurrencies. There are a few things that stood out for me: - DeFi and financial engineering is at all time high, - Consensus moving towards weaker Byzantine assumptions in favour of scale, - AI has changed the workflow for all researchers, especially @claudeai - Lightning/Bitcoin is mostly absent, replaced by various networks like ETH, SUI, XRP, Cardano, AVA and even Solana. It was nice to see @ittayeyal and @el33th4xor’s selfish mining paper win the test of time award. Very well deserved, especially given the many doubters (both in industry and academia) when the work first came out. Most importantly, there is a whole new generation of researchers, bright eyed and super excited for the future of cryptocurrency. There are MANY of them. Research magic, energy and vibes is still there. I am thankful to witness it first hand and hope it continues for the longest time! 😊

The funniest thing has officially happened to the International Association for Cryptologic Research.

A short 🧵 about the paper I presented at E-Vote ID last week. The paper explores “coercion” (vote buying, forcing someone to vote the way you’d like) that is “silent” (voter doesn’t know about it). This was joint work with a large team, and it took years. While I presented it and all of the authors had significant contributions, @PulpSpy deserves the most credit for getting this paper published. 🙏

@shayne_coplan In case you see this, would love to hear your take on what @AugurProject did wrong. I remember taking part in their ICO and had given up on prediction markets until PolyMarket came about. My top thoughts: 1. Too focused on tokenomics (didn't need its own token) 2. Stablecoin rails weren't ready (related to 1) 3. User Experience (UI, UX, etc) 4. Market Timing?

ACM has announced all papers will be 100% open access in 2026. Keep in mind what they are really saying: every paper will have to pay an OA publishing fee or it won't be published. In many cases, the fee will be paid by someone else (library, waived) but fees are now mandatory.

Many people have told us that this is one of the most memorable opening paragraphs they've come across in a book. 🙏 The funny thing is that the analogy wasn't a hit with reviewers, so we were going to take it out, but had a last minute change of heart because our editor liked it. I've learned that it's very hard to predict which parts will resonate with readers, whether in a book, online essay, or any other format. Publishing is always a nerve-wracking shot in the dark.

Congrats to @msv_mahsa for becoming a PhD doctor today! She was doing research on Arbitrum when it was still on testnet, front running before we had the term “MEV”, and stablecoins almost 5 years ago. Well deserved!
