@beyondthepaid I've been seeing Spanish language queries in English campaigns for a while now. Translating them into English usually has the same meaning as the initial Keyword, but in Spanish.
As always, if they don't convert, exclude them ๐คทโโ๏ธ

We all assume that hidden search terms waste money, but I wanted proof.
So I analyzed $20 million in spend, 14 million clicks, across 933 campaigns to see for myself.
Turns out they do and to a staggering degree!
For every $1 in ads you buy, Google siphons $0.85 in forced inefficiency through hidden search terms.
I'm firmly in the "this is not for privacy but for Google to sell low quality inventory" camp, and the rest of the data bears that out.
Beyond the lower efficiency, we also saw CPCs that were 52% higher and CTRs that were 44% lower.
It was a pretty herculean task getting all this research compiled, and I've written up all my findings in a blog post, which you can find in the first comment!

@NeptuneMoon @Pete_Bowen Untimatly it's about testing LSV and volume and adjusting accordingly
English

@NeptuneMoon @Pete_Bowen LSV (low search volume) is tough. I often test "City + Service" keyword variations and track which ones are LSV.
For the ones that are NOT LSV, i'll run those in their own ad groups if they have enough volume.
For just "Service" keywords they'll get a general non-city Ad Group

How to Keep Google Ads Feeling Local When You Serve a Wide Area
A friend runs Google Ads for a plumbing firm that services a large area containing several smaller towns. He asked:
How do I keep my ads and landing pages feeling local so they convert well when the business serves a wide area?
My first thought was that there are there are a few options:
- Set up a campaign per town and use geographic targeting to show the right ads to the right people
- Group town-specific keywords like "plumber Barrie", "plumber Newport" into their own ad groups. Each ad group would have an ad and a landing page with the town name.
- Get fancy and use location detection to dynamically update the town name in the ad and landing page.
Each of these has merit and drawbacks:
- Googleโs location targeting isnโt perfect. Even with the tightest settings, Google shows ads to people in or regularly in the area. This can include neighbouring towns.
โ Most searches wonโt include a place name. "Plumber near me" is far more common than "plumber in Newport."
- Google might not match town-based searches to your town-specific keywords. Especially if you're using smart bidding.
And they all introduce more complexity:
- Managing more campaigns takes more work even if you use tools like portfolio bid strategies and shared assets.
- You need traffic-shaping negative keywords to (try to) prevent ads for Newport showing up for Cowes, Ryde, or Binstead.
โ Multiple landing pages to build and maintain. Five services in ten towns means 50 pages. Having one page per service and changing the town name on the fly makes your landing page system more complex - and it doesn't always work.
But the more I thought about it, the more I realised this isnโt just a structural or technical problem. Itโs really a conversion rate problem.
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "sump pump repair in Barrie", theyโre not just asking about geography. Theyโre using location as a shortcut for something else.
They want to know:
- Do you actually serve this area? (Is it worth calling or filling in your form?)
- Can you get here quickly? (Especially in an emergency.)
- Have you helped people like me nearby? (Can I trust you?)
Mentioning the town name in the ad or on the landing page probably helps. But itโs not the only thing that matters, and itโs unlikely to be enough on its own.
You need to show that you serve the area, you can respond fast if that's important and that you're trustworthy.
