The 60s caused an entire realignment in American politics. The Republican Party led by Goldwater and William Buckley and Reagan moved more conservative and the Democrats moved more into a liberal direction. Would the Republicans have done it. Nixon seized upon southern white discontent and created the Southern Stategy. It was a Democratic president who signed the Civil Rights bills of the 60s.
