NEW: Georgia Tech's Brent Key tells @PeteNakos College Football is currently 'in a great place': "People focus on the negative. But if I’m not mistaken, viewership is at an all-time high, fan engagement is at an all-time high. Merchandising sales are at an all-time high. More people are watching." A fascinating Senate roundtable event on college athlete employment unfolded on Capitol Hill today, where comments from Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) & Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) - seated next to one another - paint the stark differences between the two parties on this issue.

You don’t believe NIL is a free market? Is something beyond demand for a player dictating these values/prices? Are ticket sales, national media visibility, increase in admission applications to the institution not ROI? Or is it just the CFB title or bust? As a libertarian, I’m very confused by the Republican position on this. It’s a losing effort. The agents and players are not going to suddenly be like, alright, fine, you don’t have to pay us anymore.

@RossDellenger This is an idiotic statement, especially coming from a Democrat Senator who isn’t known for being pro free market. The primary fallacy of NIL is it’s a free market where players are paid based on their💰 value. 0 of this is based on ROI. It is simply out of control pay for play.

‼️‼️Nick Saban is spot on!! For over 30 years I’ve been involved in some capacity with college athletics. *Leadership development *Character development *Culture development *Purpose development Perseverance, loyalty, humility, etc…. All of these are about the future of the student-athlete. In the last 5 years, transfer portal & NIL has shifted the focus from delayed gratification concepts to the “treasure” most immediately at hand —a quick fix, all about me, money mentality. To do this with virtually no guidelines, the NCAA has proven themselves to be incredibly weak and irresponsible, to put it mildly. 👇👇👇👇

College football's most decorated head coach Nick Saban spoke at the White House on Friday at a college sports roundtable hosted by President Trump. Saban called on lawmakers to fix issues he has seen at the collegiate level, where Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals have turned the focus away from education. "How much does anybody talk about getting an education anymore? Nobody talks about it at all, which is the most important thing any of these student athletes can do in terms of enhancing their future."

This is a ballsy power play by Trump. Lloyd's of London was the gold standard for maritime insurance policies until just a day or two ago when they started cancelling policies or jacking them up 3-5X. Others insurers followed. That collapsed commercial shipping traffic through Hormuz, which choked oil shipments out of the Middle East. Trump doing this means the DFC has the chance to displace Lloyd's as the big dog in this game, when they have been the lock-in player for many years. It also frees up all the oil that was getting trapped there, heading off shortages and keeping the energy market alive. And why not? It's the American navy that sunk the Iranian ships that were harassing tankers. And the American Navy -- at least for now -- will keep those tankers safe. It's a huge reassurance to allies -- both oil producers and oil consumers -- that our campaign in Iran isn't going to sink their economies. And it allows America to be choosy about traffic in the Strait. It also potentially means billions of dollars in insurance premiums at wartime rates going to America instead of the UK. And those rates are STILL going to be cheaper than what shippers were getting.

I get that we should all maintain a healthy level of skepticism about information we’re given, but is it possible that one gets so lost in speculating about back-room deals and ulterior motives that you miss what’s blatantly clear? What incentive do you think Trump has to back Israel for nothing in return? Is that even aligned with his brand? Or is it just about forming a contrarian narrative to distinguish from saturated voices in this media space? If so, isn’t the aim to build consensus about sensical matters?

It’s disingenuous to claim that his response was “reductionist” when your original post fits the same bill. He’s merely holding a mirror to your claim. Is the American attack on Iran targeting civilians? Will civilian casualties exceed the former regime’s torture and killing of its own people? Where’s the nuance?

@ChrisKartalia This isn't an Arby's where you order people around, Chris. If you want to write a reductionist analysis of another religion to distract from the civilians being killed in Iran, I encourage you to do it so we can all laugh at it

For my entire adult life, Republicans have repeatedly attacked foreign countries on false pretenses, caused millions to die, tortured brown people, eliminated women's rights, and given trillions in tax cuts to the rich while exploding the deficit Absolutely disgusting

@JensenVero64278 @JJohnLGA @MichaelRyanRuiz Considering we took out two dictators with continents of separation, I think we’ll do just fine with bases right along the shipping lanes. Cool graphics, though. Really hard to find maps of the world these days.

Unserious people waking up daily having to defend something they thought they voted against. 80% of Americans are against this war. He literally campaigned on cheaper prices, job growth, Epstein files & no new wars. You just need to completely dismiss anyone still standing by him

Venezuela was selling over a million barrels of oil/day prior to the US naval blockade following Maduro’s elimination. That’s a notable amount considering their refineries are dated. More importantly, they were reselling Russian oil purchased on the black market as a means for the Russians to skirt sanctions.

@JJohnLGA @MichaelRyanRuiz If you don’t see that Greenland, Iran, Panama, and Venezuela are coordinated maneuvers to cut off Russian and Chinese resources, which is indirectly tied to boosting Ukraine’s leverage in a negotiation with Russia, we are not on the same field of discourse.

@RyanRHashmi @MichaelRyanRuiz So if you see that Russia (heard of it?), is leading a war of aggression, shouldn’t we do all we can to help defend Ukraine that’s lost over 100,000?

@RyanRHashmi @MichaelRyanRuiz Derangement is full throated support for getting out of the Middle East because Trump says so and then full throated support for war in the middle east 1 year later because Trump says so. Deep down u know u were conned and that’s enough for me tbh 🤷

Nobody is discounting the gravity of military action. It’s about whether or not it’s necessary. You don’t have to agree that something is necessary to understand the facts that make it plausible for someone else to conclude differently. It has nothing to do with your past service, which is obviously greatly appreciated, but you did also have the freedom to choose to enlist.

@RyanRHashmi @MichaelRyanRuiz must be exhausting to function with these levels of cognitive dissonance to justify support of a conman and regime solely focused on self-interest and self-enrichment at the expense of the US populace. Prayers sent.

You might want to look up the military enrollment numbers since Trump won the 2024 election. But I suspect anyone signing up to fight isn’t your core argument for whether this action is just. Adults do difficult things. Children sit and whine about the mildest inconvenience even if it secures a delayed reward.

@RyanRHashmi @MichaelRyanRuiz Let’s see you raise your right hand to go over there and defend the Iranians then. Regime change isn’t clean. You think we can just let nuclear sites and nuclear material fall into the hands of whoever takes over next? This is a bombing campaign with no idea what comes next.
