This week @cynthiamcgillis and I talked about the two completely different directions companies are taking marketing right now. Disney put out an ad that made me cry over a cruise (lol) and Stripe posted a job for a human storyteller with taste and judgment. Both understand that eliciting real human feeling is what builds lasting brands: Disney has been doing it for 100+ years, Stripe is well on their way. Contrast that with the $99/mo AI CMO that launched this week, promising to handle all your content while you sleep (lol, lmao even) People think AI lets you shortcut marketing, but we're all quickly realizing it can't shortcut human emotion. The brands that recognize that (and invest in the human connection!!) are the ones people actually root for. Millennials are the elite generation because they cranked out 12-page essays the night before they were due. No ChatGPT. No Claude. Just lo-fi beats playing in the background, Black coffee at midnight, footnotes that were somehow correct, and pure delusion. Grade was an A minus. Period.
