Ichibun Sugimoto (杉本一文) is a Japanese illustrator that was active primarily from the 1970s onward, and often drew on themes of the occult and horror. He produced numerous works for mystery novel covers, but perhaps best known for his haunting and evocative artwork for the novels of Seishi Yokomizo (横溝 正史), the celebrated author behind the iconic detective Kosuke Kindaichi (金田一 耕助).
His style blends realism with psychological unease — detailed, lifelike figures placed in unnerving, often surreal compositions. General readers were drawn to his distinctive style, and one of his art books became a commercial success.
Sugimoto's work played a major role in shaping the visual identity of modern Japanese horror and mystery fiction. His use of muted tones, stark expressions, and eerie stillness creates a signature mood that feels both elegant and disturbing.
Even today, his illustrations are instantly recognizable and deeply influential, especially among fans of ero-guro, horror, and avant-garde art.
