@Tank_Archives Artillery always could engage tanks, with armor-piercing shells, fired over sights or with guided indirect fire. Tanks had weak top armor. A nearby HE shell burst could sever the tracks. Scattered German artillery batteries frequently had to face Red Army tank charges.

Trials of Soviet heavy artillery against armour began #OTD in 1941. It turned out that 122 and 152 mm guns made fine anti-tank weapons in a pinch. This knowledge that came in handy when powerful guns were needed urgently in 1943. #artillery #history #WW2 #WWII

Even in 1940 Mussolini planned to backstab Germany after provoking a Soviet-German war. Hitler did not like Mussolini at all when they first met. There's more.

@Tank_Archives US had no need of this. It had plenty of mobile anti-tank weapons. This was a concept the US Army captured in N. Africa. The desperate Germans had to mount AT guns on anything that moved.

The American 57 mm Gun M1 was a copy of the British 6-pounder, a potent anti-tank weapon. #OTD in 1942 a decision was made to put this gun in a halftrack to make the GMC T48 tank destroyer. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII
