@SimonDGriffiths Spot on! On average the most natural breath cycle (once in full flow) is every 2. The timing is exactly the same for breaststroke. So if someone can swim breaststroke forever, they can do the same with crawl once they’ve unlocked the code to the rhythm. Bilateral has its uses.

If people tell me they get breathless after a couple of lengths of swimming, I ask if they are doing bilateral breathing. It's not the only reason you might get breathless but I think it's quite common. A lot of people think they NEED to breathe bilaterally.

6 of us in the fast lane today, already the busiest lane in the pool. Chap gets in, swims 1 length to every 3 of ours. We suggest he may be more comfortable in another lane. He says he will lodge a complaint as we "can't control our speed." Sigh. But no lane rage. #ZenSwimming
