The award-winning filmmaker, previously known for high-profile tech documentaries, has now gone all in on Place Your Bets, a six-part docudrama exploring the cultural and economic evolution of gambling, from ancient civilizations to modern mega-casinos. Set to stream later this year, the series has already generated industry buzz for its fearless approach to a topic many still treat with kid gloves. If the premise sounds like a gamble, that’s exactly the point. “Risk is incredibly inherent to human culture and nature,” Caplan told Rocco Strydom on the Stonks Go Moon Podcast. “Without it, we’d never have discovered anything.” From Knuckle Bones to Code: The Digital Evolution of Gambling Place Your Bets is no sentimental ode to Vegas glitz. Instead, it zooms out to examine the broader sweep of gambling’s place in human history and then sharply focuses on its modern transformation. From Roman dice games to the burgeoning gaming culture in India, the series charts a global narrative. But its emotional and economic core lies in the 21st-century shift: the move from smoky tables to digital screens. Caplan’s own past as a pioneer in the online gambling space lends the project a layer of authenticity. As founder of moneygaming, one of the first skill-based gaming platforms, he witnessed firsthand how technology began to blur the line between fun and fixation, between accessible play and financial ruin. “The analog to digital revolution changed everything,” he said. “We show that tipping point - when poker was outlawed in the U.S., and online gambling exploded across borders.” The Faces of a $500 Billion Industry With interviews filmed across five countries and a unique format that blends documentary realism with scripted dramatizations, Place Your Bets captures the full spectrum of the gambling world. Real-life figures like poker legend Daniel Negreanu appear alongside fictionalized accounts of addiction, debt, and redemption. Without network interference, he and his team retained full editorial control.
