@TheMSXChannel

I'm a retro game geek who loves Japanese video games especially. MSX computers, game preservation, and making maps for games are my passions.

A longplay of Put Up (MSX, 1987): youtube.com/watch?v=0Xg07G… Developed by Yuichi Ago (吾郷裕一さん) and released on the 1987-10 issue of MSX Magazine. It's a cute little puzzle-platformer written entirely in MSX BASIC. I like how you're able to walk off a ledge and then jump. :)

Masanori Miyamoto, who used to compose music for many Compile games (Guardic, Aleste, Zanac, etc.), has uploaded something very interesting to YouTube -- the original source sketches he composed on a synthesizer, before they were converted to chiptunes! youtube.com/watch?v=3S_UI9…

This game somehow got an unofficial DOS version in 1991 by Sphinx Software, with 35 more stages. Apparently that version was widely spread around on pirated disk collections in Eastern Europe, and is way more known. In 2020, Raxiss remade the DOS game to the Oric Atmos computer.

There's this fun little MSX platformer from 1987 called Put Up, developed by Yuichi Ago (吾郷裕一さん) and released as a program listing on the 1987-10 issue of MSX Magazine. It only has 15 stages, but at least it's not overstaying its welcome.

This took me over a month to finish, but I love this game so much. Here's the complete maps to the PC-88/PC-98 action-RPG game The Story of Melroon, released by dB-Soft in 1989. mp83.file-hunter.com/Maps/The%20Sto… #StoryOfMelroon" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC-98/in…

The 1989-12 issue of MSX Magazine has a preview of Disc Station Special #4, showing this picture of Aleste Gaiden. It's not in the released game.

Today I learned that you can change the theme in Synth Saurus Ver.2.0 (MSX2) by holding the F1 or F2 key while selecting a module. My favorite is the H.R. Giger looking one.

😅 #MSX

@ES_DE_Frontend I miss half the features that ZNES had. I really loved using the Record State feature, playing it back, pausing and jumping in and playing from that point, that was amazing and you just can’t get that user friendly functionality out of modern emulators these days,

We always talk about retro games but where is the love for retro emulators? How many of you used any of these? Give yourself a point for each one and post your score.

@ES_DE_Frontend My first emulation experience came from playing NES games using NESticle. Also used ZSNES for the longest time. There was also one point in time when I emulated NES games on PS1 using It Might Be NES (funny name!).

Do you also have an old software that you still use today? IrfanView has been my image viewer since forever. Lightweight and practical, it's been with me since I migrated from MSX to Windows. I remember using ACDSee too, but IrfanView is the champ :)

Honestly, beyond that, I don't think any of the Ashguine games really left much of a mark on MSX or gaming history at all -- though the main lizard dude is prominently featured on the box for the Panasonic FS-A1 mkII computer itself, which is pretty neat!

If there's one lasting legacy from the Ashguine trilogy, it's just... the very short "main theme song," which was only introduced in the second game from T&E Soft (generally considered the best, FWIW), then reused in the third. youtube.com/watch?v=flspAo…

@wyrdwad_tom There's so many MSX games out there that haven't been scanned in high-res. Doesn't matter how popular or well-known a game is.

@TheMSXChannel Oh, has this one never been scanned before? Interesting! I can certainly do that, though probably not until this weekend. Note that the manual seems to have yellowed quite a bit (I think the previous owner was a smoker, unfortunately!), though it's otherwise in good shape.

And on a less cultural, more classic MSX collector's note... I actually got something new for my MSX collection! FINALLY! Feels like it's been 600 years! It's nothing most people would be too excited about, but hey... the original "Legendary Holy Knight Ashguine" CIB? Not bad!

@stardream61016 Yeah, not a fan. Terrible UI. I much prefer stand-alone emulators. While theoretically it does sound nice to have all in one program with universal settings, it's actually not that simple, when emulating both simple consoles and more complex computers. For RA, I use RALibRetro.

@FantasyAnime I've played it and the original Japanese version is so much better. The English localization changes too many things, the biggest one being removing the i-frames completely whenever Mail gets hit, making boss fights especially tedious and annoying. Fuck Working Designs.

Ever played Popful Mail on the Sega CD/Mega CD? Or even heard of it? This charming action RPG by Nihon Falcom and localized by Working Designs blends platforming, humor, and RPG mechanics into something totally unique. A hidden gem from the 16-bit era that still holds up.
