What does it take to win in pickleball?
Today let’s talk about a core topic that many people understand in theory, but few truly execute:
What really wins you points in pickleball?
A lot of players jump straight into learning drives, powerful shots, speed-ups at the net, and all kinds of flashy techniques, thinking these are the “advanced” skills. But what actually takes you from a 3.0 level to 4.5 or even 5.0 is usually not those things.
What truly determines whether you win more matches comes down to three words: fundamentals.
And at the core, there are just three key elements: consistency, footwork, and decision-making.
1. Consistency
Consistency doesn’t mean just hitting soft, slow shots. Real consistency is being able to execute the right shot even under high intensity and scoreboard pressure.
It’s not about “Can I make this shot?” but “Can I make this shot every time?”
Many players don’t lose because they can’t do something — they lose because they can’t do it repeatedly and reliably.
2. Footwork
Many people think their errors come from their hands, but the root problem is often their feet. If you’re not in position, not balanced, and not behind the ball, even the best technique won’t help.
There’s a saying: good footwork makes average shots effective, bad footwork ruins great technique.
A lot of mistakes don’t happen because you don’t know how to hit the ball — they happen because you didn’t take that extra step.
3. Decision-making
This is the most overlooked part. Just because you can hit a shot doesn’t mean you should. Being set only means you have the option to attack — it doesn’t mean you must speed up the ball.
At higher levels, what separates players is not how many spectacular shots they make, but how few bad decisions they take.
Many points aren’t won by the opponent — they’re given away through impatience, poor shot selection, and rushed decisions.
As you climb higher, the game becomes less about flashy skills and more about who is more consistent, who moves better, and who makes smarter decisions.
