I actually dont care when it comes to fictional characters, even if not period accurate. As long as it doesn't drive period inaccurate discussions or plot lines. The girl who played Eponine in Les Mis was awesome for the part. Its when they put people who aren't right, just for political correctness that it drives me crazy.

When I was casting plays, I had a few rules about colorblind casting.
If the playwright makes a character’s race explicit, then that’s it.
If the question is historical context, go with best actor, audiences don’t care.
In all other cases race is irrelevant.
