From insect pests and bacterial diseases to soil nutrient deficiencies, as well as viral and fungal infections, trainees built confidence in identifying signs that can make the difference between a healthy harvest and significant crop loss. This session strengthened their diagnostic skills and prepared them to provide farmers with accurate, timely, safe, and effective advice.

Kabale District Local Government
Kabale Reviews Climate Agriculture Project Progress, Sets Plans for Next Quarter Leaders in Kabale District have reviewed the performance of the Uganda Climate Agriculture Transformation Project, with a focus on strengthening implementation and planning for the next phase of activities. The progress review and planning meeting, convened by the District Project Coordination Committee on Wednesday, assessed project achievements for the first and second quarters, evaluated ongoing activities for the third quarter, and outlined priorities for the fourth quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year. Kabale is among 69 districts implementing the project nationwide. Speaking during the meeting, Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe emphasized the importance of teamwork and respect for institutional roles within the committee, noting that its composition is guided by statutory responsibilities. He called for strict accountability in the use of project funds to ensure effective delivery of results. The Secretary for Production Trade and Natural Resources, Ronald Bagamuhunda, commended the progress made so far, saying the district has registered significant strides in project implementation. However, he raised concern over delays in the delivery of inputs to farmers who have already co-funded under the programme, warning that this is affecting their confidence. He also stressed the need for service providers to supply quality inputs. Meanwhile, Secretary for Administration, Planning, Finance and Technical Services, Bridget Asinga Tumwesigye, expressed optimism about the project’s impact, noting that increased understanding of its components has highlighted its value to the district. She cited the example of beneficial insect value chains, such as the black soldier fly, which she said can significantly contribute to agricultural productivity. Tumwesigye also welcomed the co-funding model, saying it encourages ownership among farmers and enhances sustainability of the project. District leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the initiative to improve agricultural productivity and livelihoods. END

In his address,The Maaif Commissioner for Agricultural Extension and Skills Management, Dr. Henry Nakalet Opolot emphasized the critical role that frontline extension workers play in safeguarding Uganda’s agricultural productivity, particularly in controlling the effects of aflatoxins in key produce such as maize. He noted that extension workers serve as the first line of defense in identifying and managing plant health risks that threaten both food safety and market access. He further highlighted the importance of equipping trainees with practical, science-based diagnostic skills to effectively respond to emerging challenges. Dr. Opolot encouraged participants to embrace continuous learning and adaptability, stressing that the agricultural sector is constantly evolving and requires informed, up-to-date interventions.
