@JenLRossman I used to wonder how, exactly, everyone would be monitored through their screens. You’d need how many watchers, in shifts, to monitor what everyone was doing in their homes..? But now AI has solved that particular logistic issue.

I've started reading 1984, and I really thought everyone was exaggerating but oh my God we need to read this book more as a society, it's the kind of explicit cautionary tale we don't usually get except in Greek mythology

I have a theory that one could start a private/charter school where in the elementary grades there are no computers *at all*. Students would learn the same way I did in elementary school. Writing longhand, reading actual books, looking things up in the dictionary/encyclopedia, using indexes and card catalogs. Limited computer use in middle school and only for certain classes. More in high school. You don't need to have an iPad in first grade to be good at technology when you grow up. You need to learn how to *think*. How to do math in your head or on paper. How to pick out the important facts by taking notes. How to read and analyze an entire book. Learning how to research, read with comprehension, analyze and write clearly and coherently are fundamental skills schools aren't teaching any more because they're *hard*. Hard to teach. Hard to learn. That's why they're important. Doing things manually builds brain connections seeing things on a screen does not.

I taught during the rise of Chromebooks in classrooms and it was a nightmare Kids cheating rampantly, Googling every single fact, refusing to read assuming that copy and pasting things from Wikipedia counted as an answer Students were regularly able to circumvent controls to watch porn, play video games, and watch movies or YouTube in class Students used shared Google Docs to gossip, bully each other, and plan crime (not joking) Everyone knew it was a disaster but the district refused to stop using them because “this is the future, kids need to learn computers”, plus massive amounts of funding were tied to them Mandatory testing was done on the computers and they were used for IEP accommodations so they were unavoidable Eventually, things got so bad that despite vigorous protests from parents and administrators, I went almost entirely analog, requiring students only use paper and textbook except for state mandated tests That worked really well until COVID, where remote learning once again became mandatory Even after the return to classrooms administration required everything be accessible online at all times, so there was no longer any option to stop the digital distractions A true nightmare for teachers and a system that has radically failed students

@liveauthentic_ I feel like accommodations for disabilities should not extend to injuring other people though… My disabled niece has violent meltdowns, and while we understand that they are not her fault, she is not still not at liberty to hit or bite others.

@_jacobmjones Heavy on the football, as someone in a football heavy family 10 mins from downtown Pittsburgh, yes they might have optionals on the 4th; however, no way it would be in pads, theyre not allowed to pad up until heat week usually right around the 1st day of school (late august)

Ohio State transfer Mylan Graham says the biggest adjustment has been academics. When I asked what’s different: “Not too different, You just have to actually go in person… at Notre Dame obviously everybody knows how it is with academics”
