Solid game but the stagnancy of the series lead to it being immediately very over rated. Doesn’t belong in the conversation for best 2D Mario, or anywhere near the conversation for best 2D platformer.

@ManaByte Nintendo was able to afford retro studios and made them big enough to have 4 different GameCube games simultaneously in development all of which went through development difficulties and only sprung up Metroid prime

By the end of the N64 era, Rare was missing deadlines and their output was slowing to a crawl while development costs skyrocketed. When Rare co-founders Tim and Chris Stamper put their remaining stake up for sale, they triggered a bidding war hoping Nintendo would overpay out of sentimentality.  Hiroshi Yamauchi looked at the math and refused to bite. Rare only accounted for a tiny fraction of Nintendo’s revenue at the time, and critical talent was already leaving the studio to form independent teams. Crucially, Nintendo owned the rights to Donkey Kong and Star Fox, meaning Microsoft was paying an inflated 375 million dollars for a logo and a handful of niche intellectual properties.  Passing on Rare wasn't a mistake; it was letting a competitor spend a fortune on a studio that had already peaked, freeing up resources for Nintendo to build their own internal teams and weather the GameCube era.

This was such a bizarre out of place thing for Nintendo to do. I genuinely wonder if it was done in part because they wanted to give her a playable spotlight in a modern game ahead of a smash inclusion.

@TrivialLight I thought that at the time but Rare had so little creative output during the Microsoft era in retrospect selling them off was the best move. By that point Rare had lost so many talented people from the Golden Eye team.

I will always stand by the notion that them not purchasing Rare was one of their biggest mistakes.
