One lesson that I learned the hard way in crypto was trusting someone else's decision & not doing my own research (DYOR) before buying a meme coin At first, I didn't understand what it meant to DYOR until I slept in a police cell for 3 days Here’s how it happened: I joined the crypto space towards the close of the 2021 crypto bull run And as a newbie, I was hoping for quick profits because I saw my friends posting huge wins on Twitter, and on their WhatsApp status I vividly remember one, his name is Max He shared on his WhatsApp status a profit of over 750x on Shiba Inu Out of curiosity, I inquired how he did it because the ROI was really great Note: At this time, I didn't know much about cryptocurrency or meme coin trading He simply said, “buy $SHIB now and hodl, more pumps are coming in a few days” I was so excited & quickly went off to get funds to buy the token My parents had just sent my college tuition fees, plus feeding & transportation money, that's about $1,150 for the entire academic year I decided to use it and also reached out to my friends to lend me some money So, I was able to raise about $2,650 in total & bought millions of Shiba Inu tokens through his guide I was so proud of myself and was eagerly expecting a 100x return as he had told me But a few hours after buying, the coin began dumping From -6% to -35% in just 5 days My funds were dropping as well, and I didn’t know what was going on So, I reached out to Max to inquire what was wrong He calmed me down, saying I shouldn’t bother, that it was just a market correction after a sustained upward trend He added that early investors were taking profits, and that soon the coin would pump to a new ATH The reason for his conviction was that “his sources can’t lie to him” I believed him and kept holding even with a 45% loss I believed that if he could make millions from just buying & hodling this coin, then I could too, so I ignored the early warning signs to cut losses I would always check my phone to see if there had been any change in price But there wasn’t. The coin kept dumping After 2 weeks, I was at a -55% loss, that is, I was losing over $1,457 because of the steady downtrend I was now getting frustrated and worried... Yet, anytime I inquired about what was happening, he would tell me to be patient, that whales were going to push the price up to a new ATH But a tiny voice in my head kept telling me to sell, cut losses, and refund those I was owing I refused, trusting Max's advice to be patient, that the downtrend would soon be over and I’d be in profit Sadly, that never happened 😢 6 weeks later, I was at a -85% ($2,252) loss, and it began to dawn on me that I wasn’t going to recover from the losses I was in a heavy loss & didn’t know what to do And there was no money to pay for tuition, buy foodstuffs, or cover transportation to school Worst of all, my friends - who didn’t understand how crypto works - were demanding their money I didn’t have the money to pay back and couldn’t possibly ask my parents or siblings for help because they had just sent me money For the first time in my life, I was very confused & frustrated So I reached out to Max to ask why the coin didn’t pump as he said His response was so cold and painful He said: “why are you complaining of just $2,650? I lost $38,000 after delaying to take profits" He added the bombshell: “yours is nothing compared to mine" I felt betrayed... Those I had borrowed from didn’t want long talks or explanations They wanted their money, and nothing else And I didn’t have it One was so angry that he invited the police to arrest me The experience in the police cell was really bad 😥 One lesson I learned from this experience is the importance of doing your own research before buying any coin or investing in any crypto project Don’t just rush to buy a coin because a friend or a KOL is promoting it You really need to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH #BuildWithYou
