Village ponds used to be maintained by village panchayats and were a local responsibility. Then the state government public works department took them over. The loss of local responsibility and local control means ponds often go unmaintained for years. We must decentralize.

The one good news, we have in these testing times is, good water storage levels across the lakes, which supply water to Chennai City and surrounding areas. Had it been like last year, it would been a challenge too, without water where is the question of washing our hands.
