This Government is becoming increasingly authoritarian, and the suspension of Karl Turner is just the latest example. As we’ve seen time and again, when MPs are stripped of the whip for taking a stand against unpopular policies, the Government eventually U-turns. Inevitably, the same will happen here, and that David Lammy’s sinister proposals to curtail our right to trial by jury will, in due course, be abandoned. The Chief Whip, Jonathan Reynolds, insists that Turner’s suspension has nothing to do with his opposition to these reforms, pointing instead to the “tone and manner” of his conduct — both online and in the House of Commons. But this looks like little more than classic tone policing. The Free Speech Union encounters this pattern repeatedly: individuals are disciplined not for what they believe or argue, but under the pretext of how they expressed it. In reality, ideological disagreement is repackaged as a “behavioural issue” — a convenient way to sidestep the substance of dissent. We all know why Karl had the whip withdrawn. ‘Thought police’ ordered to stop wasting time on online spats by the Home Secretary. Since their introduction in 2014, NCHIs have been a waste of police time and taxpayer money, as well as having a chilling effect on free speech. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said: “Under these reforms, forces will no longer be policing perfectly legal tweets. “Instead, they will be doing what they do best: patrolling our streets, catching criminals, and keeping communities safe.” The decision follows efforts led by the Free Speech Union, which has campaigned for their abolition since its founding in 2020, and a review into NCHIs by the College of Policing and the National Police Chiefs’ Council, which concluded that a new approach was needed “to keep individuals and communities safe while making clear that lawful free speech is not a police matter”. Police forces across England and Wales have spent at least 60,000 hours investigating and recording NCHIs, and have recorded around 250,000 in their 12-year existence. In 2023, 90 per cent of all crime went unsolved, while 13,800 people were arrested for “offensive” posts and messages on social media. On Remembrance Sunday in 2024, Telegraph columnist and friend of the Free Speech Union, @AllisonPearson, was visited at home by police over what they described as “an alleged offence of inciting racial hatred”, linked to a social media post. Another egregious example of the weaponisation of the NCHI regime was when grandmother Helen Jones was spoken to at home by police after she criticised Labour politicians online, despite officers admitting they believed she had not committed a crime. Mrs Jones told the Daily Mail: “I’m very pleased — this change makes complete sense. “The whole experience was awful for me. I was never charged with anything, and the police even told me there was no crime committed — it was just someone being spiteful.” Forces will now use a tighter definition of what is deemed an “incident”, focusing on calls relating to the prevention and detection of genuine crime, protecting life and property, and maintaining public order. 🇩🇪 A court in Germany has ordered a migrant who killed a police officer to be placed in a psychiatric clinic, ruling that he acted out of fear for his life when he shot the officer. The court in Saarbrücken ruled that the 19-year-old Turkish national, Ahmet G., was not guilty of murder but of aggravated robbery, and ordered compulsory psychiatric treatment. According to the ruling, after robbing a gas station, he took a police officer’s weapon and shot Commissioner Simon Bohr 6 times, believing the officer posed a threat to his life due to his schizophrenia. The officer died at the scene from his severe injuries. Prosecutors had sought a murder conviction and a 13-year prison sentence, but the court considered his mental illness a mitigating factor and opted for treatment instead of prison.
