We had @bdeeter sit down with @fnthawar, @Shopify's Head of Eng, to unpack how they've transformed into an AI-first company since adopting GitHub Copilot in 2021 — well before the ChatGPT era.
The results? A 20% productivity increase (conservative estimate) and a cultural shift across teams.
Hard-won lessons:
🔹 Cursor became too expensive and complex for non-engineers → they switched to Gumloop workflows
🔹 Unlimited tokens led to high weekly spending by some users → they added iteration depth limits and alerts
🔹 The code review bottleneck is real → as AI generates faster, human review capacity becomes the constraint
